    Hi Jason,

Yes, I have heard the original - quite wistful.

Peter Richard Conte does a *version* of Sospiri at the Wanamaker which makes me grab the tissue box...

I'm not really a 'bachophile' as such - the only things I've played recently are some of the shorter chorale preludes and the 8 Little Preludes and Fugues. I haven't really played any of the larger scale works recently, excepting the G minor BWV542 (my favourite!).

The 8 little preludes and fugues are from Bach but they can be from Krebs too. But if it is from Bach so I can say I've played the one in A minor, the one in G minor and now I'm playing another one (the G major) and the coral "Herzlich tut mich verlangen".

    Elgar: Sospiri (Transcr. for Organ)

Sospiri works okay, but have you heard the original?  Strings, harp and organ: a wistful combination.  It was written on the eve of the Great War and makes an interesting counterpart to the Adagietto from Mahler's 5th, which Elgar unlikely knew.

Elgar's Imperial March works very well in transcription and there are numerous recordings.

    What a beautiful combination!

Once I thought on this combination: harpsichord, harp and organ.

Do you have a spare tissue perchance?  I just listened to Mr. Conte playing Come, Sweet Death followed by Cortege et Litanie at Wanamaker.

BTW, which recording on the Wanamaker can Sospiri be found?  It is not in my library.

    Cheers!

    Hi Jason,

*Sospiri* is found on *Midnight at the Grand Court* recorded for the Gothic label.

*A spare tissue*? Ummm, sorry. I do gush gallons of tears upon hearing Conte playing Come, Sweet Death.

I take it you're an Elgar fan - His Vesper Voluntaries are a staple in my repertoire and I have used them on many an occasion when I am *subbing* for friends.

    Cheers!

Gothic CDs are quite available in the UK- I must pick this one up!  Many thanks.

And speaking as the resident Elgarian of the Organ Forum: I've known the Vesper Voluntaires since I was a lad (aw nuts, not that long ago) and I've been bonkers about them ever since.  Wake me up in the middle of the night and I'll play them backwards.... Wink [;)]

Re: What do you consider the most beautiful organ piece?

    Jason,

Glad I could help - Elgar's Empire March, Faure's Nocturne from *Shylock*, Liebestod and Vierne's *Clair de Lune* among others are to be found on that CD.

    Cheers!

ps. Methinks I'll try a mirror-inversion of the Vesper Voluntaries...
