how much do leslie model 45 speakers typically go for?

and what sort of connector kit would i need to hook one up to an early m100 series spinet?

as long as i'm asking, since it's a 1 speed leslie, is there a way to change it to a 2 speed leslie?  (which, if i'm not mistaken, would make it into a model 145?)

i don't know if i really care though, as long as it has brake and tremolo speeds...  i could still pull off a cooler sounding WSOP than i can with the built in vibrato...  (that is, if i can afford this...)

    ...

it's just one of those craigslist listings where the guy says he'll let the market decide the price.  well...  i don't want to pay him more than it's worth, but i sure don't want someone else buying it first...

I'm not sure what connector kit will work but the Capt. Foldback site may be helpful. As far as changing to a 2 speed you can change the motors to a 2 speed if your OK with wiring it in but don't forget you will need a 2 speed connector kit or a DIY switch.that has slow/off/fast. The 2 speed motors are for sale all the time on ebay for an average price of 60$ each. There also is a Carribean Control kit, however, that I think is about 250$ new that can more easily turn your 1 speed motors into 2 speed ones.

Re: how much do leslie model 45 speakers typically go for?

I think if you put two speed motors in, you have to do a little woodwork to get everything right.  For example, the enclosure for the upper motor (singular) isn't big enough for the two-speed motor stack (being two motors, i.e. a smaller "slow" motor piggybacked onto the larger "fast" motor.)

There's also one crucial fact you need to know going in: some 45s have amps in them, some don't.  This will make a big difference in price.  The ones with amps are obviously way more valuable, though obviously not as much as a 145.  Without an amp, I've seen them go for maybe $300 - $400.  With an amp, probably more in the range of $500 - $600 from what I've seen.  I bought mine (with amp & 26-1 kit, plus some other stuff) for $300, but I guess I was fairly lucky.

If you're not able to go and see it yourself, it can be difficult to work with an unsophisticated seller, in trying to determine whether it has an amp, or just the little relay box.  When I got mine, I asked the guy to get down and see if there were any tubes visible at the lower left.  Hopefully your guy will at least know what a tube is!

    Good luck with it-

Your best bet for 2 speed is to get the Caribbean Controls unit. If you change the motors you will also have to alter the wiring of the relay and ac sockets to have both speeds. In either case, you'll have the equivalent of the 145. I bought one last year in very good condition for $500. and added the Carib for $250. making the value at least $750. which is about what a really good deal on a 145 would be.

Admiral you've got to change your screen name or signature to "Duplicate" :)

All great info so far. Just wanted to point out that the true 'brake' function is not a stock feature on any traditional tube Leslie. In 2 speed model amps there is a removable jumper between the power supply and motor units. You need to install a brake kit in this jumper socket to allow for the immediate brake function to occur (when you activate the brake a delay style tube actuates the slow motors for a brief moment to help stop the rotors). Otherwise, in the traditional stop/fast scenario, the rotors coast to a stop - not so much an issue with the treble horn - but the bass rotor tends to take its time before standstill. Naturally this characteristic has its supporters, but it is far from the notion of 'brake' as a sudden complete suppression of the Doppler effect (as most clonewheel keyboards demonstrate).

According to the schematic it appears that single speed leslies did not have a brake jumper socket. I've never seen the caribbean controls unit but i don't think it would be a tough task to get the break feature incorporated into your leslie project. That is, until you find a correct brake kit.

although I can't comment on proper pricing (I scored my 45 for free), I will give a 'thumbs up' for he Caribbean Controls kit. It was dead easy to install, works flawlessly.

Re: how much do leslie model 45 speakers typically go for?

i don't want the brake function, i prefer to let it coast...  as long as it can stop slowly, fine.

i think the hamptone mk 4 (i've seen it spelled with and without the e, and on their mark 1 it does NOT have the e...) can change a 1 speed to trem/chorale/brake...
