  • Hackers Want Your Account

We're running a banner announcement on this, but it's worth repeating.

Hackers are once again trying to hijack Organ Forum user accounts by obtaining user passwords. The common way in which they do this is by brute force, repeatedly entering passwords until they find one that works. The Forum software provides some protection against this sort of attack by temporarily locking the account under attack for a period of time whenever 5 incorrect passwords are entered in succession.

When this occurs, you will be sent an email informing you of the attack on your account. If you receive such an email you should check your account to make sure you still have access and to verify that no information, such as your email contact address has been changed. You also might want to change your password as well. If you notice anything out of the ordinary about your account, you should contact us immediately.

Although the Forum safeguard is a powerful deterrent to hackers, it is not a guarantee of protection, especially if you are using a common or weak password that is easy to guess. Your best defense is to choose a strong password.

You might be wondering what a hacker would gain by accessing your account. The answer is your email address and information about you and your friends that is revealed in your private settings and messages.

To protect yourself, we suggest you do the following:
    1. Make sure the email address in your settings is current to insure that you will receive Forum security notifications.
    2. Review your password and change it if it is common, weak, or potentially compromised by another website.
    3. Contact us if you notice anything out of ordinary regarding your account.

    Thanks for your attention.
