Re: was E. Power Biggs good?

Because they were the only two organists that made their entire living as recitalists.

Biggs taught at Harvard. Fox was organist at Riverside Church and I believe taught at Peabody.

      Hey Jerry,

Have you noticed that you and I show up on the "top 10 most active users" but john with 87 entries does not ?????

John, I believe both were "artist in residence" if I am not mistaken

More likely I'm one of the Biggs ( and I'm not the only one.)

Oh My! Conceit raises its ugly head! Well, if you are one of the Biggs, and you play anything like him, For God's sake, don't tell anyone!

                  Jerry,

Like John, I am a Biggs fan. Not a Fox.

Gosh John, have you put out the "flames" yet in, Chandler AZ ?

Re: was E. Power Biggs good?

                    Hugh,
If it is the phonograph's fault, I'll donate one for the cause. all in All, I must say that Fox and Biggs, along with another dozen or organists of the generation before me have graced the ears of all those who love the organ. i respect both Fox and Biggs and recognize their positions at the top. as a young organ major in the 70's, they were the cornerstones, foundations, and pillars of what I looked up to, and a tremendous inspiration to what I wanted to become.
I took Fox's side in this debate only because Bigg's was already represented. Being that this forum is in an organists home territory. I was sure that there would be more input than the three of us.

                    John,
I enjoyed our little debate tremendously. You made some very good points but in contradicting your self hap hazardly in the beginning made it difficult to defend. That is why I took the "counterpoint"and you were coming around with a good argument I understand what you meant by the term "Romantic" I in turn associated it with the era of the 1800s. I knew that from the start
If I have offended you, please except my apologies, it was not intended. I'm done with this if you Guys are.
Hey, how come you never hear Fox or Biggs playing "Tico-Tico" lololol

It seems that this is a most interesting topic. My friends in the know refer to E. Power Biggs as "E. Power Piggs". Says a lot.

about the maturity level of your friends!

Sorry, Dale, just couldn't resist that setup. (6)

Re: was E. Power Biggs good?

It,s been fun. Out of 475 listed on this site, we only got Dale to "pipe" in at the end.

With what it takes to play a real pipe organ, it is hard to argue with the talent of some one that can play, only with your own personel choice of the style you prefer.

In this day and age, as at times in the past, it is no easy task for a pipe organist or a pipe organ builder to make a living.

                          Hugh

Not sure what you mean by this.

If I have offended you, please except my apologies
                            Offended? Not at all.

By the way, for those keeping score, nowhere in the coarse of this discussion did I say I disliked Fox's approach to Bach.
