  • Old Testament

    There is an interesting passage in the Old Testament where the precious equipment of the temple is listed along with its cost/value. Some of the more colloquial translations even list these items in current USA dollars. It is fascinating, but I regret that I lost track of where this is. I am thinking perhaps somewhere in Kings or Numbers. Will someone please remind me where to find this?

    For example: "And the candle sticks were of the purest gold and cost $300,000."

    Thank you!

    1Ki 7:49 And the candlesticks of pure gold, five on the right side, and five on the left, before the oracle, with the flowers, and the lamps, and the tongs of gold,

    1Ch 28:15 Even the weight for the candlesticks of gold, and for their lamps of gold, by weight for every candlestick, and for the lamps thereof: and for the candlesticks of silver by weight, both for the candlestick, and also for the lamps thereof, according to the use of every candlestick.

    2Ch 4:7 And he made ten candlesticks of gold according to their form, and set them in the temple, five on the right hand, and five on the left.

    2Ch 4:20 Moreover the candlesticks with their lamps, that they should burn after the manner before the oracle, of pure gold;

    Jer 52:19 And the basons, and the firepans, and the bowls, and the caldrons, and the candlesticks, and the spoons, and the cups; that which was of gold in gold, and that which was of silver in silver, took the captain of the guard away.

    Re 1:12 And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;

    Re 1:13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

    Re 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

    Re 2:1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;

    Re 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

      Many thanks!

      I think that it is the 1Kings that I am looking for. I will have a closer look at that and also both 1Chronicles and 2Chronicles.

      I will have to figure out which of the more colloquial translations actually has the cost spelled out in dollars.

      Thanks again!

        You will not find it the text, but in the footnotes.

          Thank you very much!

          I tripped over this several years ago when I was employed at Fuller Theological Seminary and then lost track of it.

          Your help is much appreciated!
