  • Adblock annoyances

I have adblock plus and other adblocking software on my browser (and for good reasons, like blocking scam popups and suspicious advertisements as well as YouTube video ads). I stopped by this site today and there was an adblock blocker on. any reason why? I also have this same issue on a site where I watch all my favorite 90s cartoons, Kisscartoon. It's annoying because that site's full of scam popups and stupidly suspicious advertisements.

I'm just saying though, the nag screen is kind of too "in your face." about it. There should really be an option to ignore said nag screen. I get redirected every 3-5 minutes while reading threads and it's quite annoying. I don't know what made this happen but really, you could always set up funding by donations to PayPal. That'd be what I'd do. Hell, I'd even consider contributing a dollar or 2.

It's incredibly simple to turn off your ad-blocker for this site and this site only. If you don't want to do that, well, you're going to see the nag screen. It's supposed to be in your face. Be thankful that it's just a nag screen. I could prevent those who block this site's ads from seeing the site at all. I don't want donations because what happens is a few generous people wind up carrying the burden with their donations while the rest of the Internet freeloads.

You could set it up so that paid subscriber members don't see ads and everyone else does. There are several forums that use this same software that I've been a paid subscriber member of which do this.

The ads don't bother me and I don't block them. When being a paid subscriber is possible, and I can afford to (not currently and don't know when I will again), I subscribe and pay not to get rid of the ads, but to support the site. Of course, once I pay I generally enjoy not having the ads.

Now I have administered a forum site in the past, but not a Vbulletin one. So I have no idea how difficult it would be to set this up here. If it's a ton of work (probably) then I certainly understand why you wouldn't want to do this.

Yes, I know that and floated that idea when some objected to the inline link ads when they were introduced several years ago. I don't recall anyone having a favorable response to any form of subscription services. Same when I conducted a poll offering the ability to subscribers to set up private areas in the forum that they could manage and control access to. Not enough interest to bother, with most responders saying that they wanted the site to free and open.

There would be some work involved in the initial setup of a system allowing subscribers to block ads, but the ongoing chore of maintaining and updating user subscriptions would be the real time killer.

One of the ads is pretty phish-y; commands in bold type _Log Into Your Account_ with a big green button; I fear some may be induced to click on it thinking its the actual login for the page.

Exactly. This is why I have an Adblocker on. To prevent phishy ads like that.

I only get ads based on websites I've loaded in the past. I've never seen a phishing one here.

Everything you need to know about the ads on this site is in andyg's post linked to at the beginning of this thread. Take the time to read it and you'll know what to do.

I have no problem not blocking ads as long as they are not suspicious, scams, or intrusive.

What I consider intrusive are those that shift the text around while I'm reading it. Unfortunately, many sites like to put ads right at the top and in the middle of an article w/o width and height attributes. I email them about my concerns of their site, and if they don't fix it within a couple of weeks, they get blocked.
