  • Identifying the instrument, 1963

    Greetings -

Trying to identify how a particular sound was generated in three separate recordings from 1963-4. Different artists, producers, and orchestras, but an incredibly distinctive sound. I posted this on my Instagram, and Pete Townshend weighed in, thinking it was a Lowrey Lincolnwood run through a pedal. I'm curious what the crowd here thinks. It's the "wet" water droplet effect, which seems mostly percussive, except on "Sailor Boy" when we hear actual notes along with it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_spBFZPjso

Pete Townshend commented on your Instagram?!

I sure wouldn't guess pedal, and don't know how anyone without inside knowledge would know that specifically it's a Lincolnwood*. But it sounds like there are multiple reverb effects happening there. Spring plus tape delay and probably plate, as it sounds to me.

*If these were all recorded in the same studio (likely it seems) then it would be possible to know this.
