I have a Mormon church down the street. If I played for them, would they consider me part of the Mormon church? I'm really Catholic.

Re: To all Catholics
If my past experience is any guide--no. There are procedures that must be followed to become a Mormon; I think one of them is a geneological search for your roots (which is why the largest geneological database in this country is maintained by the LDS church).

If I am incorrect, I would like to know.

Re: To all Catholics
Hi SO:

Perhaps this thread should be address to the LDS rather than the Catholics? I am an RC myself (as opposed to an arsey, LOL!) and we do not require that our musicians be Catholic; albeit it makes it easier for them to follow the liturgy. We hired some extra musicians for Easter who we suspect were Unitarians.

I have heard of no denominations that require that their musicans be members; but I am willing to stand correct in that regard.

Why not just ask the Mormons for whom you are currently playing?

Re: To all Catholics
All positions in the LDS (Mormon) Church, be they organist, teacher or bishop, are held by church members. Although the organist is paid in most other churches, in the LDS Church everyone -- including the bishop -- works without pay.
I have played off-and-on in the LDS Church for more than 50 years. During that time I played the organ for meetings attended by the last three prophets of the Church. I have played for a regional conference. I have played for a temple dedication. The pay is nonexistent, but the rewards, as the MasterCard commercial says, are "priceless."
If you would like to learn more about the Church, stop by the meeting house any Sunday morning, or call and leave a message.

Of course not, just by dint of playing for them doesn't automatically make you a Mormon or part of their Church. I'm sure like all other religions there are certain criteria (rituals and beliefts etc.) that must be fulfilled before you become a fully fledged member of the Church.

I occasionally play for C of E Churches but that doesn't make me a defector from the RC Church. Its a job.

Likewise, if we have to hire in any musicians we don't expect them to be RC either, just as long as they show their respect for our religion by dressing appropriatly, behaving in an appropriate manner (no chatting, texting on mobile phones etc. during mass) then there isn't a problem.

I think you are correct, though I have no experience with the Mormon Church. I'm C of E myself and prefer to play for that church, though I've substituted quite a bit for the Christian Scientists, occasionally for the Methodists and a smattering of others. None of them have ever inquired if I were a member.

Thank you for the affirmation, Jason. I am embarrassed because I obviously meant:

" . . . but I am willing to stand corrected in that regard." Rather than what I actually typed. [:$]

I pride myself on being detailed and meticulous. Now about those LY's being dropped from adverbs . . . [^o)]

Re: To all Catholics
Good morning,

The conservative Lutheran denomination I've called home for nearly six decades normally requires that the musicians be members (I have heard of, at most, only a couple of exceptions). This has, at times, left congregations poorly served musically; at the same time, it has encouraged a culture of church musicianship in its members.
