At least to me... here's Westminster Abbey, a hallowed structure I know and love so dearly.

Let's listen to "Repton", 353 in NEH, 653 for the Episcopals, 50 for the Christian Scientists.

    Here we go!

An interesting comment on that video:

In addition, look at a half dozen other parts. Strong leadership eg. choir and organist leading as one entity/voice, hymn and text decidedly NOT of the 'soft-rock' persusion, congregation knows it's time to get up on their hind-feet and sing, not stare off into space/blab on their hellish cell phones/text message. Notice too, the race of 99+% of the congregation, 100% of the choir, political 'correctness' be damned, it makes a difference.

Yes it does make a difference.

Oops, sorry. Back to being a textbook liberal. I just had a "moment"...

I wonder who the organist is? Man! He can make you sing even if you don't want to!

I had an experience similar to that you describe while I was in Chicago at St. James Episcopal cathedral, the service was decidedly anglo-catholic,and the hymns all came from the hymnal, not some supplementary "pop/rock/stuff-which-never-should-have-been-brought-into-the-church-to-begin-with" book. the entire experience of having a properly conducted service where everyone enters with a sense of solemnity and a sense of profundity is a very positive thing.
