• Here's a great website

I wanted to post a link to the website of the Southern Indiana Chapter of the American Guild of Organists:

    http://www.siago.org/

I came across this site recently and have really enjoyed exploring it. It features wonderful pictures, specifications, mp3 demos, and interesting histories of many of the fine organs in the southern Indiana area.

My congratulations to those who put together such a fine website. It's very evident how much time went into development of the site. As the saying goes, "There's more than corn in Indiana!"

By the way, if anyone knows of similar sites featuring instruments from other locations, please post.

      Mr. Smith,

Welcome to the group. You can thank NYCFarmboy (realname: John) on this website for the SIAGO site. He maintains the site, and does a WONDERFUL job! He's also active in the administration of this website. Quite a contributor to the online organ community!

I just recently discovered the NYC AGO website with organs listed there as well (http://www.nycago.org/Organs/NYC/index.html). So far, no sound that I know of, but some nice information and photos.

      Michael

      P.S. I sent you a private message.

Way too many organs to list, but I do have 5 Allens:

        Re: Here's a great website

        thanks guys!

the NYC AGO website is maintained by Steven Lawson. he is the one who got me started in documenting various pipe organs .... when i lived in NYC (gosh that was now almost 3 years ago!)..wow......anyhow...we'd go around and photograph and try out the various organs around nyc. we never did many recordings back then,....when i moved back to Indiana in 05 I started the siago site....the SIAGO.org site is about 65% done in terms of the number of actual pipe organs. Sometime this summer we intend to do all the little practice organs at Indiana University if we can secure permission for that. we've done all of the large organs in the area...now mostly just picking off the oodles of Wicks/Moller/unit organs as time permits.

Thanks everybody. I enjoyed the sites. Could you guys please let me know if the Tampa, St. Pete, or Clearwater chapters have websites? I checked the National website, and you could only find the contact info for the president, but no websites. Thanks.

            Jessica,

I just did a simple Google search ("American Guild of Organists" +Tampa) and got the following where I substituted the city name for Tampa.

Tampa -- http://www.ago-tampa.org/

Clearwater -- http://www.clearwaterago.org/

St. Petersburg -- http://www.stpetersburgago.com/
[/list]

Hope this is what you needed.

Many people do not know that in Google, if you wish to find a phrase, just put it in quotes like I did with the phrase, American Guild of Organists. In this case, I wanted to find a particular chapter, so I added the word Tampa by putting a plus sign. You can also put minus signs to remove unwanted results. An example is if the search yielded a lot of Russian sites when I searched for St. Petersburg, I could put in -Russia.

Amazing what you can find if you just know how to look.

Yes, indeed. Using "quotes" on Google is known as a Boolean search. I had no idearegarding the origin of the term until I did a Google search and came up with this:

              http://www.pgce.soton.ac.uk/ict/nc/fto/search.htm

It is named after George Boole, a French mathematician.

Sometimes the trick with Google is to avoid getting too many results rather than not enough.

                      http://www.agocleveland.org/

Kind of a shameless plug, it doesn't have any of the information about the organs in Cleveland, yet. That will change, since my Senior Project is documenting organs on Cleveland's East Side. The Cleveland chapter will probably continue to collect info on the organs in the Cleveland area as they see fit, but it was John's site siago.com which inspired me to do the documentation.
