  • Tractor air intake...

I suppose this is the first time that a tractor has been posted about on this forum. But I think you will agree that it is worth while. I work on a lot of these old tractors, as well as reed organs, and I went to pick up this tractor and this is what I found as the air intake...

Did I miss something? Are you talking about the corrugated hose going to the intake? I thought I was familiar with pipe orans as well as farm tractors, but maybe I'm just too tired to figure it out!

I was confused about that too because it just doesn't look out of place. A lot of cars used to use that stuff. I always hated it because it usually didn't survive removing and reinstalling the air cleaner more than a few times.

Our trick on the farm was when the hose sprung a leak, we'd cut a bit off, reclamp, and it'd be good for a time to come! Usually, there was extra length.

I didn't realize how much this stuff was used in machinery...thanks for commenting! I'm learning a lot!

I have hoses like this for the additional heater in my truck (9-ton ex disaster relief service vehicle).
The ones for the organ are a bit larger, I think.

Interesting...yes there are larger, but there are different sizes, this is 1 1/2" trunk.

Wow! Is that a Ford or a Ferguson? Brings back a lot of memories - but I grew up with a small Case which was a devil to start when cold - had to drain the paraffin and switch to petrol until its warm enough to detonate the paraffin. :o

        Nico,

That sounds like a John Deere B we used on the farm. In the winter it was the only tractor that would push a snow plow, so we'd start it on (if I recall) gasoline before we switched it to kerosene for most temperatures below freezing. To start the tractor, we would turn the flywheel. It had no starter.;-)

It is a Ferguson TEA, I have had 11 of them, and 10 David Browns, but the reed organs haven't caught up to that number yet! I fix tractors for practicing mechanical experience as our family runs a firewood business, and machines break down, and to get someone to repair them isn't cheap...

I just love watching YouTube videos of the old tractors, engines, airplanes and so on. The tractor that really appeals to me after so many years is the John Deere model R. That massive machine could move tons of weight with a true John Deere smile. Then there are the models 700 and 800 (not sure of the exact number for each but the style resembles the R) They were truly TRACTORS!
In the US what we uneducated would call petrol is called "gasoline" or "gas" and what we call paraffin you call kerosene. But the paraffin I was referring to earlier on was actually called Power paraffin or simply "voco". It is somewhat difficult to get hold of these days as machines mostly run on diesel fuels.
How on earth did we get from organs to tractors...? :embarrassed:

I don't know, but people here in my village know that when my tractor is parked at the church, I'm inside, playing the organ ;-) Though most of the time, I ride my bicycle to church.

Perhaps it is the Valiant Farmer who has led us astray into fields and pastures where tractors roam wild.... Nico

Maybe you are referring to Tractor Vaporising Oil (TVO) which was a mix of leaded gas and kerosene.
I am afraid I am responsible for the turn of subject...I did mention that it most likely hadn't been posted about before:)
