I just returned from a holiday in New York.

I am,nor have never been(although I lived in Athens,Greece,for nearly two years)a `city person.`

Whilst there is much of merit there,I think that small can still be beautiful- I did the usual `tourist` bits-the Statue of Liberty(which is absolutely magnificent)the Empire State Building, the mandatory visit to Macy`s-but it all seems so impersonal-crowds everywhere(Times square at this time of year is a total nightmare!)and then the very poignant `ground zero.`

I visited Central Park-where there is the tribute to John Lennon(Strawberry fields)

Driving on the other side of the road is daunting, but, hey, aren`t the highways super-and,best of all,no roundabouts.

Just clarifying that I drove, quite competantly(I thought)in the outskirts of Orlando, but declined(thankfully) the offer of a car when I visited New York-like London, and other large cities of that ilke,it is a very special art,and involves a lot of work(partcularly on the horn!!)

I told the taxi driver who took me to JFK for my homeward journey, that if I ever did drive a car in America(NY)the most important accesory(forget the wheels, engine and steering apparatus)was the horn!!

I recently.wrote an article(which our local paper printed)asking readers if they knew the wherabouts of this giant `moma and poppa` roundabout who had not been advised on the merits of birth control and were spawning mini roundabouts,at an alarming rate, all over the place in the UK?

"Traffic problems?-oh,just `bung in` a mini roundabout-that`ll solve it!"(and the silly old motorist won`t mind!!)

Anyway,I did manage to see some lovely classical organs,in the US of A,even if I didn`t get the opportunity to hear them.

I`m exhausted now,and have returned to the UK to continue leading my contemporary frugal lifestyle, and to get a decent cup of tea!

`God bless America`
