    Label Maker Devices - Which One To Buy ?

    Hi all,

    I find myself in need of a new label making device / system. For marking cables, components, storage bins, etc. Up till now I have relied on various methods of marking things, like plain stick on labels and printing neatly, an old Dymo embossing tape label maker, and so on. There are sometimes when that just does not look professional enough, so I have been looking at the options for upgrading. When I build / repair stuff I like everything neat and organized ( I'm an organist after all, so being organized is sorta built in ! ), and labeled for future reference.

    I know some of you must use label makers quite often, and I'm kinda overwhelmed at all the different ones to choose from, so I'm wanting to know what ones you use, what you like / dislike about them, and if you are pleased with your current one.

    So far I have looked mainly at Dymo and Brother brands. Whatever one I get, I realize I will be buying into a particular brands "system" as far as consumables go, so opinions on that are welcome as well.

    The Dymo Rhino can do larger size tapes than the other two, but those tapes most likely are not commonly available in stores. The other two have tape you can get at Wal mart or wherever.

    I use a Brother at work for labeling tech equipment and cords. Several variants in tape are available (clear, white, colored, etc.). I much prefer that over the Dymo someone loaned me.

      I have several Brother keyboard units, then bought a PT-1230PC which is a PC USB connected printer. It's a lot easier to type on my computer and print. About $50.

      Lots of tape variations. The usual label tape is not suitable for marking cables--not flexible enough, but there are special tapes that are flexible for the Brother unit.

          Our company has several Rhinos we use for labeling cables on projects, as well as regular labeling jobs. If you need wrap-around cable labels or to be able to print on heat-shrink tube, that's where the Rhino shines. It's also far more industrial-grade than the Brother labelers, as it's designed to be used on the job.

          I think for regular (non cable) labeling, the Brothers are just fine. We have a couple of those as well (including a P Touch that's 20 years old and still working well!), and some of the options for layout, as well as the much greater variety of available label tapes in terms of color, might make it the best bet.

          All the tapes, including Rhino, are available on Amazon, most of them Prime. It's made re-stocking a lot easier than trying to dig through a Staples or Walmart.

            Thanks for the advice and opinions so far guys. I kinda figured this would be a good place to ask about these.

            It seems the consensus is to go with a Brother, so I think I will.

            I can't see a need to print on heat tube, but I do want to make cable labels. Will the brother make decent flag style ( wrap around the cable with printing on the flag part ) cable labels ? Those are the style I make by hand most times anyhow.

              The flag style labels need the flexible tape to stay attached to the cable. TZe-FX tapes. "e" stands for environmental packaging (less material used in the packaging, FX is for flexible.

              Printing on heat shrink tubing is a very easy way to label cables, by the way.

                Toodles, I can certainly understand how the heat shrink tubing works neatly, and is pretty elegant as well. But that is more for new installations where ends are not on the cables already, is my thought. I do a lot of retrofit / repair stuff, and I'm sure the flag ones will be fine for that use. Thanks for the TZe-FX recommendation. I'm probably going to get / order one this week sometime.

                  Hi everyone,

                  I thought I should update this thread a bit with my final choice. A couple of weeks ago I got a Brother PT-D600 with the computer connectivity ability, and the full color screen. I have not had a chance ( or need ) to play with it till tonight. After putzing around with it for a half hour or so, I gotta say that I love it ! The labels I made tonight look SO professional, it is hard to believe that it is so quick and easy to use. I did not play with the computer interface at all, but using the device as is works so well that I may never find a need to use the computer with it.

                  My only complaint so far is that the instruction book is so Small ! But that is not just Brother that does that these days; every electronic gadget comes with those tiny books anymore. I know I can get it full size from their website and even print it out, but it is quite annoying that "I" need to do that.

                  Thanks again for the advice and recommendations. I'm very happy I asked you all before getting one.

                    Thanks for the update. I may be in the need for one soon, and this thread has helped advise the purchase. The one I use at work is going kaput because someone kept mashing the keys too hard in their respective holes, so either the contacts are worn out or broken.X-( I should have known better to let staff use it! I should have only let prisoners use it--it would have better care.O:-)

                      When I bough my Brother QL-500, found the manual also very small. Google Brother and you will find that it Is easy to download a printable pdf manual for every printer they make. Hope this helps.

                        Hey, guys. Frankly speaking, my brother tze-231 works just fine. The only difference from the Brother TZe tapes that I can suss out is that there are instructions to tighten the tape the first time before putting it into the machine. Brother tapes ship with a piece of plastic that keeps the tape hub from moving during shipping and this version doesn't -- that's the only reason I can imagine tightening would be necessary. It's not a problem and keeps another piece of plastic out of hte landfill. Also, I find these tapes are just a little more difficult to peel - the slit is just a tiny bit harder to find, but again, not an impediment. The labels themselves look identical, so it's a great deal and I'll be ordering more.
