Found a Rodgers 655 For Sale On Craigslist. They Are Asking $ 4000.00 Which I Think Is High. Can Any oneTell Me What A 1980's Vintage Rodgers Organ Like This Should Sell For ? Some Have Suggested That This Series Or Rodgers Organs was Not Their Best In Terms Of Tone Quallity. Interested In What Folks On This Forum Think About The Tonal Quality Of This Organ.

I tried out this organ when it was a new model around 1988. It is an analog organ, and one of the last of the analog line for Rodgers, meaning it's got a lot of features to make it sound fairly pipelike, but nothing comparable to the newest digital models. Back then, I think the dealer was asking $10,500 for it. Considering it is probably close to 20 years old, I concur that $4,000 seems a bit steep.

But, I like the tone quality of this little organ (but remember it is analog). And EVERYTHING is borrowed on the organ: it's got a flute, a principal, 2 reeds, and a short celeste rank--every voice comes from these. Note that the celestes are only 37 notes, I think.

What it should sell for depends a lot on where you are and how plentiful used organs are. Note that you can buy a new 3-manual Johannus on sale for $10,000 for the rest of June. But I'd say this is high. If it's from a dealer with delivery & installation, and warranty, then $4,000 is pushing the top end of the price range. If it's from an individual, then it's too high.

Depending upon your budget, take a look at the new Roland C-330. Lots of organ for a low price point.

      Toodles,

You are correct, the sound of these was not bad at all, but there just wasn't much there. It was so unified that it was bothersome to anyone wanted to play serious organ music. The Celeste would have been done via a phase shifter.

Build quality was decent, so from that point of view should be alright for another few years. It is possible that this model had MIDI implementation, if that is the case, it would be worth a bit extra.

My guess is this organ should sell for close to $2,500, certainly not more. Delivery and install extra if needed.

For $4,000 you should be able to fetch a used digital with MIDI that is newer than this Rodgers 655.

Looking at the new Roland C-330, I'm not sure I am all that impressed. For one thing it does not have an AGO pedalboard, secondly, it does not appear to be voicable, in the typical Rodgers fashion. And it won't be as cheap as some people think either, probably around $15,000. There is other product out there at that price point which may offer better value.
