  • Allen positive (analog)

    Dear Forum Members,

I have the opportunity to purchase a well-maintained, older Allen Positive from the late 60s, for less than $3K. I am wondering if anyone here has heard of them, has an impression on them, or has experience playing one. The organ apparently has a lighter, Baroque-type/Holtkamp stoplist, and is said to have chiff.

Any thoughts? Good investment or not?

    Thanks,

    Andy

    Re: Allen positive (analog)

My own opinion is that I would NEVER spend that much on an analog organ. You can get a nice used digital Allen for that price. If you play it and you like it, then it's your money. As far as an investment is concerned, it's a bad one. It will not hold any value over time. It will also need periodic tunings, which digital organs do not. As Allen continues to come out with new organ generations (they recently introduced their 6th generation digital line, Quantum), the older models will continue to drop in value, especially an analog organ. But again, if you like the sound, fine. Just don't expect it to be a good "investment".

I remember playing several examples of the Allen Positive. Most were of the variety with just 2 sets of oscillators, Prinzipal and Quintadena, but some also had a 3rd set of Regals. The speakers were in a cabinet which was atop the console, making the whole affair quite tall.

But if the organ is in good condition, it might not be a bad price. You can always add to it.....

Dear Hyacinth (and other more technically-minded members),

How would you suggest adding to such an organ? How easy/difficult would it be to add MIDI out to operate an external pipe-stop sound module (ALA Ahlborn Archive or Rodgers MX-200)?

        Thanks,

        Andy
