• Conn "Pipes" on Allen Organ?

I just got a Conn organ which doesn't work, however it does have three sets of speaker pipes. There are two large sets, the tallest pipe being about four feet, and a small set of pipes in a W formation with the center pipe about two feet. (So is that two 4 foot ranks and one 2 foot rank?)

I really have no desire trying to get the Conn organ fixed. It is inferior to my Allen 310-C. However I have no real speakers for my Allen and I have hooked the Conn speakers to the Allen. Any advice on how to do this. I don't know if I did anything right or wrong, but the speakers do work and the organ sounds WONDERFUL !

What is the best way to hook Conn speakers to my Allen organ?

Should I take the amplifiers out of the Conn and use them in the Allen?

Is there anything that I could do wrong that would damage my Allen organ?

Can I accidently burn down the house?

    Thanks!

Check out the archive http://organforum.com/search/SearchR...=pipe+speakers Lajko would be our most prominent pipe speaker expert. I was modifying a pipe circuit on a Trinidad theater organ two weeks ago in hopes of connecting some awesome JVC speakers to the unit (As you know the trading price of pipes today is higher than the organs) and I didn't calculate the Ohms correctly and the whole main circuit went out on me.

So yes, there is the chance of doing damage if you don't do your homework first. I don't think as an owner of both Conn and Allen organs I would try to use a Conn amp in the Allen organ, but others with more tech knowledge may be able to tell you how to pull that off. I'll be following the thread with interest as I need to follow up with repairs on the Trinidad and put back the 8 ohm speakers I had been using.

Best wishes. I know others have Allens with the pipes and I hope they'll be able to point you in the right direction!

      Tony,

Each Conn pipe unit is equivalent to an 8 ohm speaker cabinet, so you can safely add one pipe unit to each channel of the Allen as long as there is only one other speaker on that channel. The S-100 amps in your Allen were designed to safely address two 8-ohmspeakers per amp, so it shouldn't hurt anything.

One warning -- the Conn pipes contain rather smallish speaker drivers. Far as I know, each one, no matter how long the pipes, contains only four 6 x 9 speakers. That doesn't give them a lot of bass handling capacity. Since your organ has all the pedal stops in the "flute" channel, it may not be a good idea to have a pipe speaker on that channel unless you put a blocking capacitor in series between the amp and the pipe speaker to keep the low bass out of it. A non-polarized capacitor of about 40 microfarads should be about right.

In fact, it might be wise to use a blocking capacitor on any pipe units you hook up, as the speaker cones in there may be getting rather old and fragile.

Let me see if I understand this correctly.

I can hook up two Conn speakers to each Allen amp.

Do I hook them both up directly? Or can I daisy chain them?

Also, my Conn speakers are old and if I use the 32' pedal stops with those speakers they will shake too much and may cause damage to the speakers.

My simple solution to that is just don't use the 32' stops. They don't do much pitch wise anyway with the speakers I already have. They just shake a lot.

Tony, send me your email address in a private message. I will draw a diagram of what I'm talking about, scan it to a pdf, and attach it to an email for you. A picture is worth a thousand words....

Briefly, what I mean is that you can install two 8 ohm speakers in "parallel" on one Allen S-100 amp. Whether you connect directly to the amp or daisy chain them doesn't matter as far as the load on the amp is concerned.

But I still recommend a blocking capacitor in "series" between the amp and any pipe speaker as a safety measure.
