  • First organ choice

Looking to purchase a cheap first organ (under $1000). Will be looking at a Balwin Home Theature system that is around 35 yrs old and a CONN organ , probably 627 or so, that was made around 1988-90. Any pro/con of the organs? Son is learning on 32 pedal unit. Anything special that should be checked out on either of them before purchasing?

      Re: First organ choice

I appreciate your concern about durability. Don't have $1700 for a organ. Most organs I have seen for sale are less than 32 pedal. Or do the 32 pedals come up more often, just not lately?

Thanks for all your help! Sent message to the person in Colorado inquiring about the organ. Is this model a newer vintage organ? Or do you like that just because Rodgers still is making/supporting organs? Any in shipping cost to Chicago? If I know what tube needs replacing I could probably do that. Do service manuals help you troubleshoot well ( I have looked into getting a service manual for the Baldwin since it does have 32 fanned and concave pelals.

              Re: First organ choice

there is a Rodgers 330 on ebay in Massachusetts I believe:

nice old analog 3 manual.. it will go cheaper than most Rodgers because it has stoptabs rather than knobs

opening bid to start is 500 dollars....

I saw a similar 330 with stoptabs in Omaha Nebraska sell on ebay for a little over 1,000 I think.

I have a Rodgers 550 (well my Mom does anyhow..grin) that is just phenomenal. I very highly recommend these older Rodgers analog organs. The 550/330 & 660 are all basically the same just different in a few stops, numbers of pistons and other minor features.

So far I've spent 350 dollars in service charges to fix a cipher and replace a amplifier on the 550... like Charlie says the electronics on them are very standardized, so they are fixable by a good electronics technician.

One thing: these 3 manual Rodgers analog organs are BEASTS to move and weigh alot (400-800 lbs). Make sure your doors are wide enough to fit the console thru etc before buying! :)

Oh..I would recommend a organ with REVERB (electronic reverbation) for your home. Not sure if the 330 has that or not...it was a option that some had and some didn't.

And don't get your heart set on any organ on ebay... take your time, there are new beautiful organs listed every week so avoid bidding wars and just wait for what you want near you, it will show up in a few months most likely.

EDIT: it is over 1,000 on ebay now..seems to be quite a few bids on it..still a few days to go so who knows what it will go for, there could be a motivated bidder for it I guess in Boston.

On ebay whoever REALLY wants something will bid last minute (about 20 seconds before the auction ends to prevent others from bidding the price up)...so save your bids for the last minute if you can.

              FINAL EDIT:

final sale price on the 330 was US $2,045.02

another Rodgers on ebay...this one in Washtington State:

looks like a older model, don't know anything about it, but does look to have AGO pedals.

                    Re: First organ choice

Thanks for all your help but we went ahead and bought the Balwin. The free Rodgers in Denver is gone, he did end up replying. Even it was free it was looking $1000-1500 for shipping. That was over our budget. Hoping we can can 3-5 years of good use out of this one. If my son remains dedicated to the organ and it does fail after that period of time we would probably buy a newer model.
