Viscount makes or at least sells a small, MIDI pipe organ called "Minster Pipes". It has one rank of principals playing at 8', 4',2 2/3' and 2'. The 8' octave is a Bordon or something. This was made to plug and play with Viscount digital organs, but do you think it would take stop information from other MIDI consoles? Do people, Viscount, Allen or whoever make stop controls some non-standard, proprietary thing? Just wondering.
You posted this in the Pipe Organ area as well. Please refrain from cross-posting. Apart from being annoying, it dilutes the effectiveness of your post.
Where are you located? I am an authorized dealer of Viscount in the U.S., but may not be your representative. If not, I can at least direct you to the correct person.
I was able to get the name and number of your local Viscount dealer. He would be happy to help you with the Minster Pipes. I can give that to you over the phone or through my personal e-mail. I do not feel comfortable putting someone else's info out there for all to see. Thanks!
Don't laugh, I toyed with the idea of using my Yamaha keyboard. I think the "Minster Pipes" pipe organ only takes key on-off signal from MIDI and has its own control box for the stop action. I could build a very basic 1 manual console integrating the control for the organ in the console and hopefully not voiding any warranty. :P If I do build a console, I'll used a spare Zimmer pipe organ manual and not the cheap keyboard an case anyone was going to ask.
Speaking of Zimmer, does anyone have like a 7 rank Zimmer with a super-bright mixture they want to just give away? Tuning them, I actually became fond of them. Of course, the poorly installed and poorly voiced Allen I have to suffer would make me a fan of ANYTHING!
Judging from the Viscount price list, the retail would be in excess of $30,000. It is not terribly cost effective to build just one rank of pipes. A second rank added to it would not cost all that much more.
Hope this is not your idea of "not too expensive".
$30k is way out of "not too expensive". If I had a $30k budget for a small unit pipe organ, I'd go to Coulter Organbuilders in Atlanta, GA and get one of their 4 rank series organs.
With my skills and the pipes I have scavenged, it would be stupid to not build at least a 3 rank organ. One rank would be a straight 1 1/3, but it is a separate rank. Since have organ building skills and pipes, I'm sure I could build a small pipe organ, especially a MIDI controlled organ without a console for WAAAY less than $30k.
I wonder if a builder offering 1-5 rank MIDI pipe organs with used pipes might be able to sell pipe organs to churches that might not not otherwise buy one. With a modern digital console and a MIDI pipe organ, you could have a nice hybrid!
Johannus, Ahlborn, Viscount and other brands use MIDI boards to control pipe organs. How does Allen interface with pipe organs? I bet it's proprietary.
