  • Another Organ

Well, things didn't work out with the Allen in Maryland but we found another one in Virginia, which isn't terribly far from New Jersey. It is a 1985 Baldwin. We own a Baldwin piano but I have never heard a Baldwin organ before. The Buy it now price is $2,350. All that needs to be done is some contact cleaning, or maybe it just needs to be used a bit as it hasen't been used in a while and worked fine after turning it on again and being used. Here is the link

please respond quickly as time is running out to bid on it.

As always, thanks for your help.

Baldwin no longer makes organs--parts might be hard to get if needed. Suspect this is analog instead of digital (as indicated in ad). I think you can get more organ for your $$$.

    Toodles.

      Re: Another Organ

agrees with previous post, hard to get parts for that. I wouldn't personally bid over $750.00 for it, but thats just my own opinion.

also if you can look at it in person, I'm told the last Baldwin organs were outsourced and just badged as "Baldwin" and were made of fibreboard and fall apart over time, so if you can check it out in person before paying for it. *be especially careful to determine what humidity it was stored in, fibreboard turns to dust when the humidity changes all the time*

The photographs listed on ebay are not very helpful in determining its present condition.

But.. it does look like a attractive organ if it is indeed built well and working properly. The listing talks of the pedalboards being noisey, this is a problem with many modern organs in that the felt doesn't last under heavy use which MAY indicate other things aren't built well on it either.

        Re: Another Organ

hmm I guess you guys a correct. Im looking at what apperars to be a newer Rodgers 2 manual organ (AGO pedals) with 2 nice external speakers (we could use them in my 2 level living room). His price is $3,200. I'm waiting for a reply on the year it was made and a stop list, and if he can negotiate the price a bit (this isn't on E-Bay). Who knew finding a practice organ for home could be such a hassle! Unless it was made in the 90's I don't think I would spend the 3 grand on it, I guess I'll let you know more about it when I find out. Thanks for the help guys, this hasen't been an easy task.

About the pedalboard. Every Baldwin organ I have touched, has a pedalboard that goes "clickity-clackity" when you push the pedals up and down. Heaven knows why, but, they do, and, it drives me insane. And, I think that a Rodgers is a much better sounding organ.

            Re: Another Organ

Anything for roughly 3 grand, I wouldn't go beyond Allen and Rodgers (unless you can find a copeman for that price, but GOOD LUCK) I don't know of anything else being made good back then. Unless you want to rebuild a pedalboard, avoid lower model Rodgers instruments.....and internal speakers are not good. If you can buy one with, sure. But first thing, buy an external amp, and run external speakers (good ones) with a good bass channel for lower frequencies (ie. 16' stops lower octaves) because, right now, my car can probably make my church's organ sound better than it currently does underamplified. (I'm the organist/mechanic/electricalgenius here)

              Re: Another Organ

Goodness! Why is it so difficult to find a decent practice organ? Avoid Baldwin like ebola.
Allen/ Rodgers is the way to go. I'd even purchase an analog since they sound better most times than the early digitals.

$3,000 is quite steep to spend on a first practice organ.

                Re: Another Organ

The main reason for getting an organ would be for my mom to practice on and shes been playing the organ for 16 years. The Rodgers I spoke of has two large external speakers, I'm still awaiting a reply via E-Mail with more info. We simply can't afford anything over 3 grand so hopefully the person selling it could negotiate the price a little. I'll let you know more info about the organ when I get it. I think the model was a Rodgers C505. I'm not sure what year that was, can anyone here help me. I won't even bother asking the person questions if it's an old instrument. As long as it's newer than '84 we are fine. Our church uses an 85' Allen so being from the 80's isn't a big deal, but I wouldn't spend that much money if it's from the early/mid 80's.

                  Re: Another Organ

Well, I assume that the C505 is probably from the same line as the C440 (I may be wrong, this is copmlete assumption) it would make sense though. If so (if it's a Rodgers from early 90s) they sound pretty good properly amplified. If it's Italian built you may have to dismantle the pedalboard and replace the felts, for they get noisy. Otherwise, nothing else should really cause problems. If I'm WAY off on anything, someone say so.

these are the stops. It has an expression pedal for both the swell and great manual and a stop so 1 pedal could control both. The man selling the organ is a church organist and services them so he should know what he's talking about. (hopefully) He says he may be able to take $300 of the price and sell it at $3,000. I guess this is an ok deal?

it appears that the stop list gets all meesed up when it is posted, sorry.

I found out it was made in or right after 1992.

                        Re: Another Organ

Should sound good as long as it's got as mentioned, good speakers and amplification. I'm sure if you can make a seperate channel for low frequencies (which isn't too tough) it would sound just great..and if it's anything like the C-440 it may have a headphone jack. Convenient for home.

On Ebay right now is an Allen ADC-220, from the 1980's for about $1000. It has princess pedals instead of AGO, though.

A organ tech suggested to us that you put a piece of carpet under pedalboard to absorb the sound. Need it to be placed properly so pedalboard still makes good contact with organ body though.
