Problem with my Allen Tone Cards Spreadsheets

Someone sometime ago mentioned that the Card Image page did not display any marks where the punches should go. I didn't think much of it at the time because I'd only had one complaint and my checking of the files loaded to the Forum appeared to work OK.

Well, I've just migrated to a new desktop computer and am working with MS Office 2010 Professional, and I discovered that the "punch" marks weren't showing for me. I did some investigation and eventually found that the problem is that the Font I'd used for those cells (DomCasual BT) did not exist on my new computer. I went to the Web and found a place to download that Font from and when that was done, the spreadsheet page was again working properly.

Anyone experiencing a problem with the "Card Images" sheet not displaying the marks where punches should be made is recommended to download the DomCasual BT Font to their computer. I got the Dom Casual BT Font from this free site: http://www.ufonts.com/fonts/dom-casual-bt.html .

Sorry for the difficulty. I just assumed that DomCasual BT was a standard Font and that everyone had it.

This is just a warning post--please don't respond to it here with material relating to the other threads on Allen Tone Cards. If you have a problem getting the Font, I'd prefer a PM.

    David,

I hate to suggest this, considering how much work you've put into the various stages of your spreadsheet. Stupid question, but is there a possibility of using another, more common, Windows font? FWIW. I realize you're probably looking for a very specific shape to represent the holes. Would Wingdings or Webdings provide what you/we need?

Michael, it is not at all a stupid question. I checked out a lot of different fonts before deciding on DomCasual BT. I wanted a font that displayed a "1" that had a lot of black and a narrow allocation of space--the more common fonts put too much white around the characters for the amount of black displayed; most of them were also more squat. There is another font I've found during my investigation, Onyx, that would also be acceptable to me, but I doubt it is any more widespread. That being the case, I'm reluctant to go to the significant effort to change what is in use. Since the problem can be resolved by simply downloading a font to the user's computer, and the font in question is free, I think that solution is adequate.

I have the DomCasual BT font at size 12--most of the more common fonts won't display in those narrow cells until the size is reduced to 10 or even 8, at which time there is very little black showing in the cells at all. Those cells have values determined by numeric calculations, so they have to contain values of 0 (zero) or 1 (one)--the zeroes are set to display as blanks, since that is the way they are represented on the cards.

There may be a way to force a black rectangle to display when a 1 value is in the cell, but I'm not (yet) that skilled with Excel®.
