  • Rodgers C-445 Technical Difficulty!

Hi, everyone; thanks in advance for any help offered in attempting to solve my problem.

I recently purchased a second hand (only one prior owner who took extremely good care of it) Rodgers C-445 digital organ.
While I have seen some reviews of this instrument on this forum that were not exactly glowing =-O, I actually fell in love with it from the moment I laid eyes on it and continued to appreciate it more each time I played it (almost every day since I purchased it in July of this year). This may be simply because the organs I have previously owned (home: Hammond Model C3, Yamaha Electone) or played at church (tube model CONN (!!), older card reader Allen) sounded nothing like the C-445 nor had as many of the features as it does but I really do think the instrument approaches a true pipe organ sound and feel (I've played a couple of pipe organs in churches as part of organ crawls only so have not had a tremendous amount of experience playing them but of course have listened to a lot in churches primarily).

At any rate, I was playing last night with the headphones plugged in and, without warning, the sound suddenly stopped issuing from the phones. Thinking that the headphones or wire connection to the console was the problem, i disconnected the headphones and tried to play over console speakers, but nothing! This despite the fact that the stop tabs remained lit, the "set" button remained lit (an indication, according to the Owner's Manual, that the instrument is ready to play!) and all my presets continued to register as I had set them. I noticed that the customary (low but noticeable) hiss from the speakers (and headphones when plugged in) is missing and that there is simply a low hum when the instrument is switched on. I have tried several things to see if I could remedy the problem: unplugged the power cord from the power bar and then plugged directly into the wall socket, tried a different power cord in a different wall socket (probably the same circuit as the other though!), jiggling (and ensuring a firm connection) the two harness plugs that connect the upper portion of the instrument to the speaker cabinet below, I even completely unplugged the organ and left it that way over night! Both manuals and pedal board have not sounded since - this happens whether or not presets are selected or if stop tabs are manually engaged and whether headphones are used or not - i have, of course, ensured that the expression pedals are jacked up as well!!

Has anyone heard of this happening?
Can anyone suggest a fix or is this something I will have to have a tech look at?? :'(

Again, any help would be very much appreciated; if necessary I can answer any questions that I did not anticipate answering in advance above.

    Thanks again!

I don't know much about your particular Rodgers instrument, mine is older, but you might take the back off and check the circuit breakers on the amp. There are three on the amp in my Rodgers. Short of that you may be faced with a service call.

Thanks very much, Snowbandit, I did in fact have the back off today (on my instrument, this is a strip of wood about 8-10 inches wide that runs the length of the back of the top portion of the console giving access to the circuit boards and back of the keys, etc.) and peered inside but wasn't too sure what I was looking for so I closed everything back up. I will have another look on Friday to see if I can locate what you're referring to, it's certainly worth a try. Will post results so others with same problem (hopefully none!) will know.

      Thanks again!

Unfortunately, while I did in fact discover a set of 8 fuses adjacent to the amp, they all seemed in good condition (I found that the top of the cabinet comes off which gave me a full view of and access to the circuit boards and connectors etc.).
Does anyone know where I might find a copy of a technical manual for this instrument?
Rodgers has recommended a technician, turns out I know him as he serviced the old CONN organ I played at church; this was a number of years ago!
So at least I have that option.
