I have a chance to acquire a '89 Rodgers 760 2m organ with all the audio/speakers. Its here on the left coast and was wondering if it would be a worthwhile expense improvement over my '78 850? I'm being told that its all digital with midi...although early digital. Does anyone have more info on this model? Would I at least be able to add, through midi, more voice palettes to this organ?
Thanks
The Rodgers 760 is definitely NOT a digital organ. It is a micro-processor controlled analog organ. It is most likely lighted drawknobs, though moving drawknobs were an option.
In many ways, I believe your 850 is a little bit better organ.
Primarily this is because the 850 has 3 sets of oscillators, 1 main, 1 ensemble, and 1 celeste (probably 4 octaves) while the 760 has just a main set of oscillators and a 3-rank celeste rank. The additional set of oscillators makes the 850 sound bigger.
The 850 could have a basic MIDI implementation added quite easily.
The 760 stock model used metal & plastic keyboards (LoDuca Brothers) while the 850 used wooden-core keyboards.
The physical construction of the 760 is not as robust as the 850.
That said, the 760 has a little bit larger stoplist overall. I'm attaching the 755 brochure--it's the same model but with LED Stop tablets instead of lighted drawknobs.
Thanks Toodles!
Funny you pointed out the celeste.....the person I spoke with hesitated to say that the celeste on the 760 would be as good or better then my 850. I asked him about the celeste because that is a major component of the organ that I enjoy. He also said that my 850 is a very "comparable" organ so I might just back off this trail for now. $3k to be 10% happier??
