  • Practical MIDI cable length

I'm needing to use a MIDI cable of a longer than 'normal' length. Ideally, I'd like to have one 50 foot long.

    1. I can find them in 25-30 foot length and can use an inline connector, but I haven't found one 50 feet long. Does anyone know of a source?

    2. Latency (delay) can be an issue in some types of interfaces. Is anyone aware of any practical limitations for MIDI cable length?

Thanks in advance for all input.

I have a 50'er and have never noticed any delays.

Signals travel through wire at nearly the speed of light.

          Momboc,

Your article reference was indeed, right on. The issue isn't so much with latency, as Wes says. However, the reliability of a signal can degrade over longer distances without being repeated. The same issue arises in Ethernet, Audio, and video cables. 7 meters as a limit is always safe, however, longer runs are possible with higher quality cables. Of course, you will need to pay more for quality cable, though.

If cable length becomes an issue, you can always use a MIDI repeater.

I considered that. But I wondered if more electronics might increase the possibilities for greater latency.

              Thanks!

If it's simply functioning as a repeater or splitter, or if it's just a proper implementation of MIDI through on another MIDI device, there should be no detrimental effect on latency.

Could you point me to some low cost models?

I think any module with IN/OUT/THRU ports can be used as a repeater.

Here's a dedicated through box which should definitely work -- http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MIDIthru2

Check out the MIDI Ranger at http://www.dtsmidisystems.com/
This allows for longer lengths without any data loss. It comes with two MIDI adapters that connect using a CAT 5 cable up to 2000 feet.
