    Saying Goodbye... To the Allen

Greetings.<div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>     We are getting ready to remove our 705-D MOS Allen at Church next week.  Although I like the organ, one of the MOS boards died in September and we decided to pursue a pipe organ instead  (more on that later and in another thread).  So, this instrument has 14 speakers and 7 amplifiers.</div><div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>     I am curious to know what sort of market there is for these instruments.  My thought has been that this organ might be more sellable with less speakers so as to make it a viable practice organ option; that is my guess at least.  I don't know that we're really looking to make much of anything on it (particularly since it needs 500-600 worth of work) and I think we should probably be happy if someone comes and takes it.</div><div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>     What's it like to sell/dispose of one of these?</div><div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>      Best,</div><div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>              Nate</div>

      That's not funny...</p>

I think that organ, speakers and all, would make a great edition to my bedroom. ; )</p>

So would most pipe organ consoles and wooden pipes.</P>

I bought a single computer MOS-1 organ with 5 speakers for $500. Granted, it was from a Rodgers dealer who wanted to get rid of it pretty badly. Your organ has three MOS-2 computers, so it isn't going to worth much. Have you thought of donatingit to a church who wants an organ but can't afford a new one? They could spend the money to fix it up.</P>

Hello,<div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>     Indeed we have thought of donating it to a Church.  I think though that due diligence probably requires that I at least weigh all of the options.  Plus, it would be nice to have some sort of real-world valuation for record-keeping purposes.  I must say that I can't imagine a Church wanting an older instrument, but who knows, maybe I'm way off-base.  The organ has been well maintained up until this point so aside from the malfunctioning computer (which is switched off) it is in ship shape.</div><div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>       - Nate</div>

                Nate,</P>

Well, I didn't see this thread before asking you on another one to tell what's happening to the 705. Congrats on the new pipe organ.</P>

Where is this 705 located (city/state)?That will have a lot of bearing on whether or not youget any takers.</P>

A 705, which was the top-of-the-line 2 manual in its day, is not to be sneered at even today. Yes, it's several generations behind the current digitals, but MOS-2 was indeed a considerable upgrade to MOS-1, and a 705 with it's three parallel computer systems can make some nice music.</P>

The bad news is that it is almost impossible to get any money out of an old church organ, no matter how good it is. I have two or three decent organs in my shop just sitting there, and every now and then I get a call from a church wondering if I'll come and get theirs. Sometimes I'm interested, sometimes I'm not. For an Allen 705, I'd at least be curious. It's a better organ than I have at church right now (old Rogers analog). So I might even be interested in that angle.</P>

Greetings,<div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>     The Allen 705 is located in New Haven, CT.  It does make a very respectable sound, particularly in light of its age.  The foundation stops form a pleasing ensemble (especially when I load in all of the extra Diapason alterables).  I was playing around with it yesterday (even with the bad computer shut off) with 8's and 4's on, and putting on the Great 12th and 15th and Swell reeds as needed - it sounded darn good.</div><div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>      Best,</div><div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>              Nate</div>

Incidentally, until the latest failure, the organ was completely maintained since day one, by Larry Cyr of the local Allen Organ Service Co.  It has had various things done, such as speaker replacements and the like.  I have easy access to the maintenance records for this one.<div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>        - Nate</div>

                      Nate,</P>

Thanks for the info. CT is a little too farfrom Arkansasfor me to come get it, as I'm still having to hold down a "real" job -- or maybe I should saya "paying" job, as I consider playing the organmy "real" job. It just doesn't pay the rent. Surely there will be someone that will need it up in that part of the country.</P>

In about 5 years I plan to semi-retire from my verydemanding organ service business, stop fooling around with junk and concentrate on servicingthe finer Allen, Rodgers, Johannus, and other rewarding and worthwhile organ installations in my area. Then I hope to have a little morefree time, and I'm going tosearch far and wide for a nice affordable usedorganto install in our little church. I have a feeling thata lot ofAllen MOS-2 organs will become available for the takingby then, maybe even some of the later Allens and digital Rodgers organs. I'm confident I'll find aworthy replacement for our aging Rodgers analog.</P>

Anyway, that's my plan and dream. Good luck with the new pipe organ.</P>

Well, tomorrow the Allen is coming out, along with the shaky old facade that covered it!  Though we like the Allen, we are excited to replace it with something born of our own ideas and sweat - and with the odometer at zero!<div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>   - Nate</div>

Alas, the Allen as it was is no more.  A bare organ perch is all that remains; waiting for its new resident. <div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>   What's more interesting is that we discovered the famous facade pipe that fell off of the organ (and gallery) 26 years ago, which signalled the death knell for the old Hall pipe organ; rounded out, soldered, and back up in its place in the facade.</div><div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div><div>     - Nate</div>

Hello, I am interested in the 705. Can you email me a picture and how much for it? We customize the older digital Allen organs to the point that they compete with world class pipe organs. Thank you for your time.
