• Allen voicing

In the manual for my 301-c it talks about the "finishing" technique performed by the tech upon installation of the organ where they, "adjust the organs voicing to match your room's acoustics". I guessing this is an EQ adjustment, and I was wondering, if so, does anyone have any information about how to adjust these settings? I'm trying to take away some of the screechiness.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

An Allen 301-Chas no actual built-in voicing/finishing (tone) controls other than the simple knob on the console marked "voicing" which is just a rudimentary treble-rolloff knob, and the "bass boost" knobs on the DAC board.

Some were equipped with an optional treble control on the DAC board, or the DAC may have been upgraded to a newer version with bass and treble controls.

The primary way of dealing with treble screechiness on these organs it to aim the speakers away from you, bounce the sound off a wall or ceiling. If your speaker cabinets have tweeter controls, try turning them down.

Also, screechiness in organs of all types is often a side effect of playing in a too dead acoustical setting. The finest pipe organ will sound harsh in a dead room (though a voicer may intentionally limit its volume in the upperwork). A digital reverb added to an old MOS Allen can help some, but the best cure is a good lively room.

You might consider replacing the organ's amps with a modern-day "powered box mixer" with built-in digital reverb. There's some circuit modification required, but it does yield good results. I did that for an Allen in a little chapel once and it did help.
