  • Adjusting keys on an Allen

    Hi
Can anyone tell me how to adjust the contacts under the keys. My Allen 632-3 has a problem with the notes sounding to soon. The Choir manual you only have
to breath on the note and it plays, the great is not as bad and the swell has no problems well maybe two or three keys. I know how to get to the manuals by removing screws the pull down cover, but if anyone can tell me if there is a set distance between the contacts I would be most grateful I know it must be a slow
and tedious job but I am retired and it would be better than watching TV.
    Thanks
    John

Look at the back end of the keysticks and notice the "contact lifter" -- a piece of metal attached to the key with two screws. The lifter is firmly attached by one screw, and the other screw is used to adjust its height relative to the contact leaf switch.

Using a slender flat screwdriver, turn the adjusting screw so that each contact closes about half-way through the key's dip. This adjustment is a matter of taste, and some people prefer a "quicker" action. But half-way down is a good rule of thumb. You might also need to clean the contact points by inserting a clean dollar bill, then pulling it back and forth while holding down the key.

You might also want to adjust the tension springs so the keys are not so easy to depress. There is a nylon nut just in front of the contact lifter that attaches to the spring under the key that provides the tension. You can use a nut driver to turn that nut a few turns and see if that also improves the feel of the action.
