  • Allen has started charging for PDF copies of the older organ Owners Manuals

A few weeks ago Allen redesigned their website. The owners manuals for anything older than Ren disappeared. Now they have been added back with a $10 fee per pdf. I wonder if they expanded the owners manuals to have the specification insert and some of the other information that you had to request special from Allen.

It looks like our days of quickly looking up specification information for an organ have come to an end.

That is sad. Some manuals for church organs are available at the LDS Organists resources page: https://www.lds.org/music/accompanyi...?lang=eng&_r=1

I wouldn't mind so much about Allen charging for the manual, but would really appreciate it if they posted the spec sheets at no charge. That's probably more useful than the manuals.

      WOW! How sad!

I wonder if people really know what information is inside their owners' manuals before they shell out the cash? If they had better quality manuals (or even service manuals), I'd be more willing to pay.

      How sad.

Well, if your model isn't older than 1996, and you just need some basic specs, you can go on wayback machine and look at the old Allen website from that era. Some models are there.

Allen ADC 5000 (1985) w/ MDS Expander II (drawer unit)

It does seem crazy to pay for a manual download but perhaps with the decline in organ sales, Allen needs additional sources of revenue to survive.

But are there really that many people that are lacking a manual for pre-Renaissance organs?

I can't believe that $10 / pdf is going to make a meaningful difference to Allen's bottom line, nor do I believe the cost of hosting these files is a factor either. More than likely the move is to discourage the casual comparison and sale of out of warranty models by potential purchasers of used instruments.

I agree, Toodles, especially because so many people selling used instruments don't bother listing the specs.

I contacted Allen to see if I could get the specs. or a brochure for an older Allen organ
They did email me something —but also told me that any other inquiries would have to go to my local Allen dealer....

Surprise, surprise, surprise! That's been the pat answer I get from, but nothing in response by email. At least you got something in the email!

P.S. My "local dealer" is located 5 hours away! Fortunately, the service person is only 2.5 hours away.
