  • 2 questions related to a rodgers organ...

About 10 maybe even 12 years ago, my church replaced our almost 50 year
old Allen organ. Was a horrible organ, at the end was a
firehazard, but that is a totally different story. I swap playing
time with another lady at our church and we have two questions about
this instrument, and cannot seem to find the answer from anyone!!
For starters, I am not really sure wich Rodgers organ it is. It
is closely related to the Trillium Masterpiece Series 968. I use
the crescendo pedal in moderation; however the other organist does
not. She does not understand the features of it and i really dont
know enough about it to tell her. I just have worked with it over
time and gotten used to it. So my question is what are the
features of it and what is the best way to use it and tell someone how
to. As for my second question: our church does not leave
our sanctuary aircondition/heat on during the week. The company
that services our organ has told us that the components that make it
sound more like a pipe organ are rusting, and it will soon just sound
like a regular digital organ. The guy that told us this did not
seem very educated about the organ, and I just wanted to hear your take
on it. The minister of music and I are trying to convince our
church to leave some type of air or heat on in there to preserve both
the organ and the piano. Thank you in advance for your help!!!

You have 2 different issues here: 1 being the care of your instruments ... the other being the education on how to use them.</P>

If your other organist is interested in learning how to use all of the Rodgers features then I would suggest having a dealer come in and step through it for an hour or so. From what I've seen of them there are way to many features to learn by dinking around ... especially on the newer models. You may get the basics down but I doubt you will figure out all the bells and whistles. I would also hope there'd be an operator'smanual a dealer could give you for reference purposes.</P>

As far as the care of your instruments ... I would be more concerned about what no heat/no air does to the piano's tuning then the organ. But - to be on the safe side open the case up (<U>assuming this doesn't void any warranties left in place which it very well may</U>) and look through it. If you don't see any rust then ask the service guy to point out where the problem areas are. It sounds kind of fishy to me ... but if he does show you rusted components then he may have a point. Ask your dealer for a second opinion though before tossing money in for new parts - particularly if nothing has broken yet. If a metal case containg various components has a little rust on it who cares? As long as the circuits inside are working that's what matters. Just my 2 cents ...</P>

Did this "service tech" tell you this on April 1st? I have heard some ridiculous things in my 50+ years on this planet but that just about takes the cake.</P>

Rust is aresult of interaction between metal and oxygen that involves the difference in electrical charge of the molecules. It is like slowly burning something. Salt increases this electricalpotential, which is why salt can cause rust on cars. </P>

They said it will degrade until it sounds like a "regular digital organ"? What does that mean? If anyone tried to pull that kind of crap on me, they had better be ready to give a detailed explanation of the physics involved. And I would probably correct them once they were done.</P>

Temperature can affect an acoustic piano over time. But the speakers on a digital organ should be able take fluctuations in temperature. The electronic components should be fine.</P>

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought this was weird.</P>

Sounds like someone phishing for a dumb congregation with money to spend.</P>

yeah, i have talked to several people who thought that was weird.
Needless to say, our church will not be using their services
again. Thanks for the help, i think!
