Hallelujah Chorus Question…

How do you play the Hallelujah Chorus without blasting the entire
congregation out! I had this problem last Easter and got some
complaints from some of the older members of our church. Our
sanctuary seats about 1100 people comfortably, but will be running over
Easter. I just need a suggestion on how to use the festival
trumpet feature while not playing it too loud, but making it sound like
an actual trumpet. Thanks for your help!

Try, like, not so loud? Seriously, can you dosome trumpet solo bits on your festival trumpet and the rest on great or swell, for instance solo the long notes at 'King of Kings' on the trumpet and the 'Halleluiah' bits at thelast five bars?

YUP!! Thanks for the help!! No complaints about the volume at all, on
the Hallelujah Chorus anyway...always get complaints about the volume
on the hymn Christ the Lord is Risen Today! Told to play that way
by the minister of music, so i guess they can just deal with it!

Glad it worked OK for you. As for hymns - if you can't play loud for that one, when can you??!!

                Saw thispost rather late.

Maggieporter, don't worry about complaints about the "loudness" of your playing. I once played in a church where a few felt that my playing was too loud and others thought it was a breath of fresh air - the only church in my entire career as an organist where I got such a complaint. Oh well, first time for everything I guess. Anyway, I later found out that my predecessor (no disrespect intended towards him) played the same way, same speed, same registration, same everything all the time for 28 years. I only remained there for 2 years as they were never really serious about music to begin with and the hierarchy never supported the music in anything. But that's a long story!

In any event, you may be in a similar situation where a few people are used to so and so's playing, who played the same stops, the same way, the same......etc. Unless you are using chamades for Silent Night or something like that, keep on truckin'! Show them how great organs really are!

If you're playing an electronic organ, you may find thatthe Festival Trumpet is on a manual that has an expression pedal. Choose to use it on that one, and adjust the expression pedal as needed.Or, if it's on a manual that has no expression pedal, or you're playing a pipe organ in which case this stop's volume cannot be adjusted, then don't add any additional stops to the solo stop and use it only in certain parts of the piece to highlight certain areas of importance.

                Cheers!
