I have been looking for a mid size two manual home organ to be used for practice, nothing too fancy. internal speaker system. Anyway. I have been looking at the Johannus Sweelinck 27 and the Ahlborn-Galanti AG 2200. I am leaning toward the Johannus. Can anyone tell me more about this instrument (something not on the website). Thanks!

I am not familiar with the models you are referring to, but I was under the impression that Johannus makes cheap organs, (not in the good sense either). I've heard better things about Ahlborn, but have not played either brand though. I don't know what your budget is, but you might want to look for a used older model Allen or Rodgers. I've seen Allens from a few generations back go for well under ten thousand.

Actually now that I'm looking at it, you should be able to get a used MDS series or possibly better for the kind of money you would spend on that Johannus.

Hi,</p>
Just to say that you are better off with a smaller organ with external speakers, than an organ with more stops and has only internal speakers. With internal speakers you get the sound blasted at your knees (which is not the best for hearing it), and the audio system (especially the speakers) are too cheap to adequately do the job. Also you tend to get vibrations through the cabinet to the keyboards which annoys some people.</p>
Even for a practice organ it makes sense to invest in an audio system, just so you get a better idea of what you are playing - greater clarity, better ensemble sound, less distortion, less development of the typical electronic organ mono-color (flattening out of the sound field and increased sonic glare).</p>
When purchasing - think long term.</p>

I attended the national convention of the AGO in Chicago last summer and played both the Alborn Galanti and the Johannus, several models of the latter. I had previously played a Johannus that I thought was horrible and had never played an Alborn Galanti. </P>
My experience was--the console of the Alborn Galanti was absolutely beautiful and the sound was amazingly bad. The consoles of the Johannus were OK with untraditional layout but the sound was extremely good, even the little ones. </P>
I'm very fortunate to have a beautiful 160 rank, 8 division,pipe/Walker hybrid organ in my living room. However, if I were searching for a modest cost, really good sounding digital organ today--I'd look very seriously at the Johannus. FYI, I have no connection with any organ company and no "axe to grind" with anyone. However, I've played and heard lots of digital and hybrid organs and that experienceis the basis of these stated opinions.</P>

It is very typical of the Ahlborn-Galanti folks to take an organ and display it, and not set it up, or tell people to listen to it through headphones, or put 2 audio channels on a large organ. You have to wonder how serious they are about selling organs at all. Most of them are product people, not organ folk. The factory default voicng on them is just awful. Believe me they don't have to sound awful. </p>
At least the Johannus people have some passion about the craft.</p>
You are indeed very fortunate to have a hybrid organ with Walker digital stops. They are still among the very best sampled stops available anywhere. They are now increasingly building complete church organs. I'm sure Allen and Rodgers are finding them a real nuisance these days.</p>

Last night when I looked it up, I found the Sweelinck 27 for approx. $16,000US, but I cannot remember if that was a used one or not.
