  • Add Reversible stop pistons on an Allen.

I've got an MDS-25 that I added a Klann zimbelstern on the blank relay tab. I think it was for the vibrato/tremolo option. Is it possible to make that stop tab reversible via a toe stud or (or a piston)?

It works, but that tab is next to a speaker relay tab and at the far end of the rail ... it was awkward when some speakers dropped out when the Zim came on.

Good question. I don't think there is an option like that in the MN system, but you could try assigning two of the pistons (such as the #5 and #6 swell divisionals) so that they operate ONLY that one tab. Then set the Zimbelstern OFF with one of them and ON with the other one. That would give you instant piston access to it without having to reach way up there and risk hitting something else.

To assign a piston, you go into the "Configure Pistons" window in the Console Controller menu. Then simply turn on the Zimbelstern tab by itself, and press SET+ the two pistons (one at a time). Then exit the menu. Now, those two pistons will no longer activate any stops other than the Zimbelstern, and you can then set one of them with the Zimbelstern ON and the other with it OFF. The Cancel piston will still cancel the zimbel.

Oooo that's a good idea. I didn't think of that!!! I wonder if I can do something like that with one of the two Tutti pistons. I seem to remember those program in a similar manner ... I don't need two tutti.

Hmm.... That would be a good idea, but the Tutti pistons may have a fixed function that cannot be changed, as do the Cancel, Set, Cresc B, and "R" pistons. It wouldn't hurt to try though. For me, the divisional pistons are relatively useless, but players who do more elaborate playing than I probably have more use for them.

I think the secondary Tutti pistons are programmable on this model, specially if it has a console controller--check your user's manual. You might have to be on Crescendo B to use the programmed function. In this case, you could have Tutti II just be a Zimbelstern reversible.

I didn't realize that the Cresc. B button activates user settable Tutii as well. The "A" side tutti/cresc is factory set. So here's what I did.

I set the Zibelstern as the only stop in Tutii I. It works just like a reversible as long I as I have also activated Cresc-B. If I don't and hit Tutti - well it's loud :-) Tutti does not physically "draw" the stop tab, but I'm ok with that.

I played some stuff from Christmas where I used the Zim. It was much easier to use the piston right or left handed. That far end of the stop rail isn't easy to reach and my glasses don't work there either. I also won't hit the next tab Rh anymore which is Main Speakers off - yeah did that once - I guess I could just disable that relay but I don't like having things tampered to not work.

Thanks John for all you do on this forum.

How does the Klann zimbestern sound? I haven't heard one. I've got a Rodgers, but it uses a different approach.
