• Need to decide: Wurlitzer 4573 / Yamaha E10-AR / Viscount CL-40

After searching the local classified for a church electric organ for quite a long time,

it became that 3 different people are selling 3 different models at once, at different price ranges,

    These are:

    Wurlitzer Orbit III

    Yamaha E10-AR

    Viscount CL-45

I'm asking for your comments and tips about what to get, please.

I already realized that the quality of the 3 instrument differs dramatically between the models,

and checked out the Yamaha and Viscount. What I'm looking for is a big bassy church organ sounds,

I have no interest in any drum patterns and cheesy strings (thanks, I already have a bunch of analog synths ;)

The viscount was a very basic organ, with "small" and thin sound, not impressive, but I liked its pedals. I can get it for less than 100$,

so that's an option. I guess a nice digital mutlieffect can do well with it ;)

The Yamaha is very nice looking, and very well built. Keyboard feels great and sound is clean and big,

but I found that it lacks the big church organ sound, rather than actually being a regular home organ in a church organ case format.

Now about the Wurlitzer. I'm going to check it out tomorrow, and the guy asks for quite a lot, but is does look much more in the direction of what I'm looking for. Any tips ?

Please keep in mind that you don't come across church electrical organs where I live most of the times.

    Thanks !!

The orbit III is the name of the synthesizer that came installed with some Wurlitzer models. It's usually a third keyboard on the organ. There should be a name or model number for the organ itself. It'll most likely bethe 605, 4573, or 4037 models.

Those particular wurlitzers, and a dare say any with an Orbit synth, were modeled after theatre organs. I'm not so sure you'll find the sound you're looking for in them. Honestly, when you cut off all the tremulants, these organs are pretty wheezy -and you certainly will have a fair share of drums and strings.

         I'd look into the Viscount.

The E10AR is very much 'old generation ' (1960's/early 70's) Yamaha, with a very thin sound. When you add stops, there's no increase in volume and no ensemble is created at all. Not really suitable for church or classical music.

There's a church near me that has a CL45.I played it for the wedding of my daughter's best friend a month or two ago. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised to find it could make some nice sounds. Not in the same league as larger instruments or more modern ones, but not in the same price bracket either.

Given the choice of the three older instruments, I'd go with the Viscount too.

It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

            Hi,

Thanks for your advice. Actually, I already have the CL-40 (yep, it's a 40, not 45...) in my house. I thought having it anyway,

as they only asked for 125$, and as I said, the Yamaha wasn't too interesting to me anyway. My plan was getting both the Viscount and Wurlitzer actually, but after reading your comments, I think I might give up about it.

I started the restoration of the CL40 today, refinished the wood and cleaned some contacts and pots. The only problem left is replacing the light bulb in the swell pedal, which is dead, causing the organ to play full volume constantly. Also, the front area of the two organ legs got a few chips on the wood finish. Too bad, I think it was caused today while we were transporting it. Any good and old idea of how to refinish them ?

If you don't mind my asking, what synths do you have?
