Your post seems to have gotten cut off in the middle. But maybe someone on the forum can chime in to offer some advice on the Viscount Chorum 90. I know that we have Viscount owners here, as well as someone who is very involved with the company itself.

It's always exciting to be shopping around for a new organ!

      Hi,

Without more information it is not easy to give advice. But some general remarks:
      1. First of all, use your own ears. If it sounds good for you, it's OK.
      2. How does the manuals play. They must be not to 'floppy' (or 'weak'), you must feel some resistance when you play (the standard manual keys of Viscount are pretty good, I must say)
      3. How much organ do you get for the money: is it voicable, is a sequenser "on board", are there choices for different voices, etc (if this kind of features are important for you).

On the Viscount website you can find detailed descriptions of the features of there organs, and the complete manuals of these models. Strongly recommended to look there yourself, if you didn't do that already.

      Personal story:
A few years ago was I was also in search for a home organ. I played on Johannus, Viscount, Content, and Eminent. At last I choose for a Viscount Sonus model because:
      • the voicing capabilities are pretty good
      • for each stop there are at least 10 and sometimes up to 40 alternative voices to choose from
      • the internal speakersystem is very good (I can't place externals in my 40 m2 living)

I delibaraty dit NOT choose a Chorum, because it lacks those capabilities. The sound IS good, but not a flexible as the Sonus. Only "problem'': the Sonus is more expensive than the Chorum. So I had to save for sometime longer, but is was worth the effort. I can now make several different organ dispositions, save them in the organ (8 different dispositions or'" styles" are possible) or on USB (if you have more than 8 "styles"- I definitely has).

So it is what you want:
      • if the voicing capabilities, the flexibility of choosing different voices etc is important for you: buy a Sonus instead of a Chorum.
      • if tis is not so important for you, play them both and let your ears decide. They are both good sounding organs, if you buy one of them you do nothing wrong.

For me, personally, the Sonus sounds better than a comparable Chorum - but that is a matter of taste, more subjective than objective.

Hope this helps. Succes in your search and I would appreciate if you keep us informed!

I wanted to report back that I finally decided to purchase the Viscount Chorum 90 Deluxe. With the deluxe model, you get a wood console rather than the vinyl covered composite material. The extra cost was well worth it and I'm happy I chose this option. I must say that this instrument has far exceeded my expectations! The voicing was nearly perfect and required only minor adjustments with some of the reeds and mixtures. I love the keyboards; tracker action and keys that closely resemble bone or ivory and have a great feel. Each of the four organ styles available provides their own authentic and distinct sound. This instrument sounds like a real pipe organ! I did find the music rack a few inches back further than I'm accustomed to but solved the problem by having my optician place new lenses with my reading Rx set to read from a distance of approx 22 inches in an extra pair of frames I had. I would recommend any organist, especially those playing three-manual instruments, to have a pair of glasses dedicated for organ playing. I would strongly advise anyone who is looking for a great sounding instrument at a good price, to look at Viscount's Chorum line. I think this company will give both Allen, Rodgers, and Johannus some real competition in the market!

Thanks for your report and congratulations with your new organ!:-)
Your experience is much like mine, although I have a physis-based model instead of a sampling based. I wish you all he best and much musical pleasure!

          Best regards, D.
