  • Expression pedals on pipe organs

    Hello,
Could you tell me by how many degrees does a real pipe organ's expression pedal rotate? i've read it's almost 90 degrees. I was considering getting a Yamaha FC7 for my home midi organ but it looks that it has maximum 40 degrees of freedom.
    thanks
edit: it looks like i misinterpreted the FC7's manual. It has only 30 degrees of range and then other 10 degrees of adjustable spring return.

2/3/19. Can't tell you that, but I *can* tell you I had to rearrange an electronic pedal to make it adequately accessible. There's a picture around http://owenlabs.org/nord$.htm#extraswell.

The expression shoes on my Allen only rotates about 40 degrees. 90 degrees would be hard to use and uncomfortable. Your ankle probably only goes 60 degrees. Pipe organs have plenty of variations so it's possible that a pipe organ somewhere goes 90 degrees, but it's not very ergonomic.

I have played many pipe organs over the years and don't remember any with a 90 degree expression pedals.

Thanks all for replies, yes it was sounded strange for me as well that they would go 90 degrees, maybe wikipedia is wrong.

Yes i figured i would have to do something like that as well. I see that you did it with the Behringer FCV100. Do you know how many degrees that one can rotate?
Do you find that after raising it like you did is similar to a real organ swell pedal?

The FC7 is a really nice expression pedal. I just bought a new one a couple of months ago to use on various Clavinovas that several churches in my area have ( thats ALL they have - not organs ! ) for when I need to play them. I have found the stock range of it to be just fine, and it feels like a regular organ expression pedal. I have not needed to use the extra range you can set it for.

The only thing you need to keep in mind about the FC7 is that it comes with an attached stereo plug that is wired for Yamaha instruments. Those have the expression pedal jack wired opposite of most other manufacturers way of doing it. I think ( but not sure ) that there is a way to adjust the pedal so it works with other than Yamaha instruments. Or you can get an adapter cord as well.
            Regards, Larry

            At Home : Yamaha Electones : EX-42 ( X 3 !!! ), E-5AR, FX-1 ( X 2 !! ), US-1, EL-25 ( Chopped ). Allen 601D, ADC 6000D. Lowrey CH32-1. At Churches I play for : Allen Q325 ( with Vista ), Allen L123 ( with Navigator ). Rodgers 755. 1919 Wangerin 2/7 pipe organ.

              Hi,
Thanks for reply. What do you mean by extra range?
Thanks, knowing that the jack is wired opposite might come in handy as i might try to interface it with arduino. Still i'm more inclined towards the Behringer FCV100 because its 20€ on amazon now.

I guess I was referring to that extra 10 degrees you mentioned in your first post. I've never played with that feature.

Looks like i was wrong again. the FC7 has 30 degrees of turn only, of which 10 can be set as that additional feature.

                Hi
So i asked an organ maker and he said that the maximum angle on organs is 45 degrees. Since i needed to know, i used my phone's gyroscope to measure the angle in my institute's organs. I measured three organs and neither of them went over 30 degrees. So, other that the fact that they would need to be raised somehow as jgowen did to make them usable with a pedalboard, i think either the FC7 or the SVC100 should be ok for studying.
