• Whats the difference in allen console design?????!!!!

I am looking into getting an Allen 301 "TRADITIONAL DESIGN" organ. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?????? I have seen some of the 1970's Allen's with the ugly Fancy cases that stick out on the sides and have the bench with the slanted legs. IS THIS WHAT A TRADITIONAL DESIGN ORGAN LOOKS LIKE??? I have seen others with the normal look with flat smooth sides and roll top covers and are modern yet old fashond looking. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT IM LOOKING AT!!!!! If you go on ebay, one ebay store is selling a 301 with a regular organ look not the ugly 70's look.

So what is the organ going to look like?

BTW: I MAY BE GETTING IT FOR ONLY $600!!!! (grins!)

My guess is that "traditional design" indicates a bench with vertical sides (Allen made benches with slanted sides for a while in the mid-1970s--I don't know how long), and probably plain, flat sides on the console, too.

This is my (somewhat educated) guess; there are others on this forum whose responses are more reliable.

    Good luck!

This is the ugly 70'sish looking one. do you know what the case design is called? like I said the one thats for sale is a traditional design and I found out it should have a roll top cover so this isn't the organ pictured.

Sorry if you like one of these organs pictured above but it is just not my style as in an organ case!

That would be my organ, model 301-C. Allen calls the case design "Contemporary".

The "traditional" one that you refer to will probably have a name similar to model 301-B. That is the traditional roll type console you seek. It sounds like you have found a good deal. If you get it, I can help you with figuring out the intricacies of this series. They are good organs, and with some (minor) modification they can make a great sound. Quite suitable for a practice instrument, and comparable to nearly all but some of the newest electronics.

            Joe,

            ???????????????

You really think Allen and everybody else have made almost no progress in building digi-organs? Well, maybe Allen has not progressed all that much, but I can tell you, most digi organs, even 10 to 15 years old now, sound better than a 301 Allen. Especially if they were installed with decent audio and voiced.

I believe that the traditional console (associated with C3, C4, TC3, TC4, TC5, TC6, etc.) was called the "chapel" style.

One advantage of the "spaceship" style console: it is likely shallower and will therefore make it through the doorways. The chapel style is precariously close to 36", although removing the lid would help.

The sound: everything is dead in tune, just like an old Baldwin. It has to be an acquired taste.

Well that's not how I said it, but I'll bite... I mostly haven't seen too many examples of newer digital instruments that compete sound and quality wise with my Allen to justify the price gap between it and them.

...and little bit of sound processing goes a long way with them.

                        Brandon,

Free ones do come up from time to time, and in an area as populous as Omaha there are bound to be Lutheran churches upgrading from their 1980's Allen and Rodgers organs even now. These organs are going to be pretty good, just not nearly as good as the latest stuff.

Getting one for free may require beingagressive, butnot pushy in relating to the local organ dealers. I assume you are quiteyoung, so probably not old enough to be working for a dealership. But you can make yourself known to the dealers, be a good resource person for them -- offer to do demos and such -- and possibly get offered an organ when they take something in trade. One they'll give you absolutely for free may not be in perfect condition, and it may require some work on your part, or the services of a technician. But you can always trade up when the opportunity arises.

                        Good luck.
