I'm sure jbird can answer this. What is the difference between an Allen MDS 70s and an MDS 71s?

I'm not John, and don't have much experience with MDS organs, but if I recall correctly, the MDS-70 was the earlier MDS series which included a card reader, used ADC samples, as well as implemented MIDI. The MDS-71 series was the later MDS which dispensed with the card reader in favor of more advanced MIDI which included stop and expression control, and utilized upgraded samples as well as improved voicing control.
Of course, I am probably incorrect, but if I read everything in the past correctly, the above assessment should be close.
MichaelWay too many organs to list, but I do have 5 Allens:- MOS-2 Model 505-B / ADC-4300-DK / ADC-5400 / ADC-6000 (Symphony) / ADC-8000DKC

Yes. MDS-70 is "W4" MDS technology, which was the first generation of this after ADC, appearing around 1990 or 1991. W4 was essentially a development of ADC functionally, and there are a lot of carry-overs between the two outside of the basic tone-generation circuitry.
MDS-71 is from the later "W5" MDS which appeared around 1995, and had many wholesale changes throughout the organ, most notably the appearance of the console controller, LED bargraph expression indicators, a different draw knob style, and much enhanced MIDI capabilities. All of these enhancements persist in Allen organs to the present day. Of course the tone generation was further upgraded in W5 as well.
Either of these organs can make wonderful sounds, properly voiced in the right environment.

Close, but according to the Allen tech site, both the 70 and 71 use the large multi board horizontal cage, nearly identical to the cage of the ADC7000. Both have console controllers and fully implemented MIDI. They seem to differ primarily in how fleshed out the audio system, though there may be some stop list differences. I couldn't get the stop lists to open on my phone, but they are listed separately so presumably different. These are massive organs, about as elaborate as any made short of the enormous mds 80 and the custom organs.John
