  • Johannus Sweelinck 20 voicing

    Hi guys,

I have decided to try my hand at voicing the organ I use at home - a Johannus Sweelinck 20. I believe it's about nearly 20 years old? It sounds fine for the most part, except that a few stops are too loud and need regulation.

Does anyone know of a source where I could download the software? The local dealer isn't very helpful and will probably get me to buy it since I got it second hand.

Is there also anything specific that I would need to hook up the intonat software to my laptop? MIDI-USB cables? Specific windows operating system?

As far as I know you cannot legally download Johannus Intonat software for free. Besides, every model has its own version. I'm pretty sure Johannus can help you if you want a legal copy.

In the EU it cost €150, for the current models. I don't know what they ask for an old version, may be less.

      Hi,

if you want Intonat for your instrument, you will need to have model AND serial number at the ready. The reason for this is that Johannus msde organs with the same model designation but were different in technical platforms.

one other thing is, you will need to know which version of Windows will work with the proper Intonat. If the organ is indeed 20 years old, it will work Xp.

I just voiced a Sweelinck 20 a couple of weeks ago. Intonat 4.0 64 or 3.2 will work, but 3.2 runs only on very old versions of Windows. Version 4.0 64 will run on XP as indicated by another poster.

A USB MIDI cable is needed to connect to the organ. The factory currently recommends the Roland UM-ONE.

A number of years ago, I seem to recall being able to download several different versions of Intonat for free from somewhere on the Johannus website. I can't find that link any more. Maybe they stopped giving it away.

BTW, I recently tinkered with the voicing of a big Rembrandt 3000 (about the same age as your Sweelinck 20), and found just by trial and error that more than one version of Intonat would address this organ. But certain features, such as the C-C# split, could only be enabled when using the later versions of the software. So if you only need to adjust the volume of a few stops, even an old version of Intonat might work. But you DO have to use the correct "nam" file for your organ. Until a few years ago (when the Johannus organs started having the "nam" data built right into the organ itself), you needed this "nam" file written for your specific model and serial number in order for Intonat to locate the memory slot for a given stop sample.

Another thought -- if you only have a few stops that are too loud, it's possible that you could correct the problem using the little thumbwheel pots on the "mixer" board. Not all Johannus models of that era have the board, but many do. It lets you adjust the volume and tone of each group of stops before they go into the audio system. You'd have to use trial and error to determine which stops go through which channels, but it might be worth a try. It's doubtful that a previous voicer intentionally left just a few stops too loud. More likely that someone accidentally messed with the thumbwheels (if present).
