• Allen Elite Opus IV

    Good evening, friends,

I've seen it, and I've played it (for a few minutes). A couple of days ago, I learned that Allen has built an Elite organ, which they have named "Opus IV," using Arp Schnitger samples, and they're touring the country with it. So, I spent part of an afternoon with several other folks, listening to a representative of Allen talk about Arp Schnitger organs, about Opus IV, and about the Elite series in general. And (what a treat!), he played one of Bach's trio sonatas (as well as some other pieces), too! After that, he answered questions and invited us to put the organ through its paces.

For a temporary set-up, not a permanent installation, the sound was quite good. For me, one of the weaknesses of electronic organs is they lack the "presence" of pipe organs. Well, I'm not going to say that Opus IV has all the presence of a pipe organ, but it certainly has a lot more of it than I've heard from other electronic organs.

So, if Opus IV comes to your neighborhood, I recommend it.

    All the best!

    Dana,

A couple of months ago, I was at the Allen Organ headquarters, and had a go on the Elite Opus I. It was a very impressive organ, indeed better than I expected it to be. I think part of it is that they are using the best, recently processed samples, plenty of hardware and lots of audio channels. The organ was setup at Octave Hall, and was well voiced. This instrument sounded and played much better than a larger spec'd 4 manual organ also setup in the hall.

If anyone wants to know what Allen Organ can do, I would suggest a visit to Macungie to go and hear and maybe play the instrument.

Great news, lets hope some of the Elite technology will filter down to the standard models over the next few years.

I only wish I could try out the new Elite but they don't have one in the UK. Though perhaps, I could pay a visit to our French forum member who has Opus II [:P]
