• What is with this organs STOPS?? Rodgers model 730 organ

I came across a nice looking organ for sale. When I saw the really small pic of it I thought it was a large 2 manual classical organ. It has 2 expressions and a cresendo, and lots of pistons and toe studs with non moving stop tabs. BUT WHEN I SAW A LARGER PICTURE I FREAKED OUT! I THOUGHT "WHAT KIND OF CLASSICAL ORGAN IS THIS??????"

    What was wrong you say?

Well first off the tabs ARE CLASSICAL. Good

BUT THE COLOR OF THEM ARE A THEATRE STYLE, WHITE FLUTES AND SUCH, RED REEDS, AND THAT SWIRRLED YELLOW STRINGS.

Was this an option or just someone being weird???

Anyhow, whats this organ like? Good sound? Midi? Age? Thanks

    Brandon,

Calm down. The 730 is a fully AGO classical model, in fact a very complete classical model with typical Rodgers layout. It's a PDI (first generation Rodgers digital) with the stereo pair audio for each division as found in all PDI instruments.

The tabs are normallyall white, but the engraving for the reeds is red, quite normal for the Rodgers lighted rockertab organs.

Perhaps there was an option (or a special request by the original purchaser) for the stop families to be distinguished by color. Certainly that would not affect the sound or playing properties. In fact, it might be rather cool.

Where is it and how much are they asking?

Well what I mean is the entire tab is red/yellow/black/ or white. I do now find that actually cool. The price is $2000.

Hi Brandon. Perhaps it is a request by the original purchaser for the stops to be in colors.

I rebuiltone instrument with a double row of stop tongue tabs that extends completely across the stop panel, above the Swell manual. Because there are so many stops, side by side, by side...I have installed solid red stop tongues for the Festival Trumpet (it floats on all the manuals), and in the Great couplers (black color), I have installed white tabs on the Swell to Great 8' and the Choir to Great 8'.

These color changes are welcomed by the organist, and so far, all the visiting organists, because it prevents hitting the wrong stop when they only can give a glance before pushing the stops.

On theatre organs, the color visuals give you a reference point to be able to quickly glance toward the stop your looking for. Thecolors are not there just to make it look pretty. While I admit that I would probably chuckle alongside my purist friends, if I viewed a church organ with theatre style colors on the stops, (horrors...colored drawknobs?), none the less, on a really big console, some color referencing would make it easier to play....especially for those of us who don't play every registration change on the pistons.

If I recall correctly, in the early 1980s Rodgers stopped building the horseshoe console Trio and started building a stop tab classical organ with colored tabs. I would have to look in one of my ATOS journals from that era, but I think some of the models still included theatrical voices, just in a straight console. The model was the 780 Asilomar. It had both classical and theatre voices. Have you actually seen the console and it's stop list? (I found an ad in a 1985 ATOS journal).

I have seen coloured stops before, though they are quite rare.

I remember some years back seeing an Allen TC-1/3/4/5 (couldn't see the serial plate) with multicoloured transparent plastic tabs rather than the solid-white ones like on mine.

I remember the stops were similar colours to pastel sweets ie. lime green, yellow, orange etc.

It wasn't very pretty, but then back in the 70's those colours were quite "hip".

              Speakers: x1 Model 100 Gyro, x1 Model 105 & x3 Model 108.

the drawknobs and pistons on my organ are color coded...all white stems with the knobs being: white (flues), red (reeds), yellow (strings), black (couplers), green (percussions) and blue (midi)...pistons are white (generals), black (reversible), and red (tutti)....toe studs repeat the pistons by being chrome (generals), brass (reversible)....with 192 drawknobs and such it does make it a lot easier to navigate the console...

so you have the right to chuckle because it is a 5 maunal straight french terraced console....

Hesco and P&S had a hell of a time with that order.

at least they move and dont light up :)
