  • How to defy the odds and get a 35 1/2 width Rodgers through a 35 opening..........

I have been offered a Rodgers 960 organ with mechanical draw knobs for free. The speakers are not included because they are built into the church sanctuary.
Now -- how to shrink it 1/2 inch....????

Accurately measure the console in question--don't just go by the brochure. Consider removing the lid for the move. Often consoles are a little undersized, and the lid can often account for 1/2 inch.

After that, there are some other tricks to make this work, but you might find your already there with those 2 steps.

      Thanks toodles for that input.

Am I crazy for getting a Rodgers 960 for free -- just the cost of moving? I have an Allen ADC 3100 that I will need to sell.

You are asking the wrong people!

Getting 3 manuals can be a nice experience; the Rodgers is probably a little more accurate to pipe sound than the 3100. Nevertheless, the 3100 is quite a sweet sounding instrument. Support for the Rodgers might be difficult unless you have an excellent Rodgers dealer near you.

I will say this: I've come to despise lighted drawknobs. For some reason they just don't work for me, and it has to do with their feel. It has nothing to do with them being lighted.

It has sat in a hallway for 5 years -- that's my only concern. It was moved out of the sanctuary due to a change in worship styles.

That's how I found the Symphony's organ! The renovated the auditorium, and the organ was parked in a hallway for around 5 years. Acid had to be neutralized on the AV board and batteries changed out (ADC-6000), but it was free!

The 5 years sitting probably won't be a big issue--might be a battery or two that needs replacing (as a guess, I'm not knowledgeable about the Rodgers digital organs).

Sometimes you can get it through the doorway if you completely remove the door, and the door stops....providing the stops were nailed in place after the door was hinged on/installed. Most all new door jambs have the door stop milled into the jamb so that wouldn't be possible. Sliding glass door? Taylor Harvey has a 960 and absolutely loves it. You can find his videos on y*utube

If need be, you could tip the organ so it is lying on it's side and rotate it around the doorway. Remove the door from the frame, to get a bit more clearance. Remove the top lid from the organ, it can give more clearance and a place to grip. Put the organ on a moving dolly and rotate. I have seen piano movers do this to get a vertical piano around a tight corner or in an elevator.

Shrink some wood 1/2 inch over 35.5 inches? That's less than 1.5%. Sounds like it can be done, depending on the type of wood. I'll leave some ideas here on how. Make sure you take pictures as I'm sure we'd all like to see them.

(Couldn't put 2 videos into 1 post, so one is just a link.)
