• Allen MDS Ciphering and making electronic burning smell

    Hi again,

I should have posted something before, but hadn't until now. I had previously complained that the Allen MDS 26 sounded nothing like a pipe organ and had a tube like sound. Well, a large part of that problem was the fact that the flute chorus in the Great is ther most awful combination of flutes ever. The speaker confiquration also leaves something to be desired.I solved that problem by adding the Classic Voicing tab to the great registration changing the 8' Rohrflute to an 8'Gedeckt and the 4' flute to a Copel Flute This made the organ much more pleasant to hear! Does this stress it any more then not using this feature? I wouldn't think so.

That adition to the normal and otherwiseboring and never changing registrationwas only used for one practice session and one service and tonight, half way through the first hymn that was sung by the choir, the organ ciphered. The organist tried to make it work properly, but if there was any registration in the great, it ciphered. Then, it produced an electronic burning smell. The Swell and Pedal still work as far as I know. The choirdid well without the organ. For the last hymn, the organist played the swell only and it worked.

Sometimes, in the past, I heardquiet but audible random electronic soundcoming from the organ speakers. I don't know if that could be an indication of anything or not.

Has anyone here had experience with something like this happening on an MDS or any similiar organ? I am just curious. I'll probably find out tomorrow whatthe diagnosis is. I am hoping the priest and parish councilwill take me up on my overly confident offer to build the church a small tracker-action pipe organ.

If we do decidewe need to buy a new organ, hopefully, I can convince the churchto buy a small used pipe organ in good condition. Those are around and will last a long time.

Allentechnicians will be looking atthe MDSsoon. IT would be nice to have it on the mend for cheap, but I wouldn't mind the oppurtunity tosuggest a real pipe organ.

If anyone here has had experience with something liek this happening with a digital organ, please let me know. I'm sure I'll find out on my own, but I still want to hear other peoples' stories.

    Thanks!

"Then, it produced an electronic burning smell. The Swell and Pedal still work as far as I know."

Might I suggest if you ever have another electrical device or appliance: whether it be a television, organ, electrically-operated pipe organ (is your tracker going to have a couple hunchbacks manning the bellows?) or vacuum cleaner, starts to produce an "electronic burning smell" that you totally disconnect it from the mains voltage and schedule a repair immediately. For both your safety and that of those in the environs of your home, church or place of work!

Obviously any device on earth, by any manufacturer, that uses electronic components can at some time go berserk because of a failure of one of those components. This type of thing is very uncommon with an Allen organ, but not unheard of. Somewhat more common with the post-MOS digital Allens (83-now) or at least I have heard, is a total failure of the power supply, but that would have brought the entire organ to a halt, not just one of the divisions.

I would expect it to be a rather small thing, cuz Allen organs are built very well. Too bad they have the worst sound on the planet!

I hope you get your pipe organ out of this.

I don't know if I will get my pipe organ or not.

Anyway, I met the technician today and we both played the organ and nothing seemed wrong. IT worked perfectly. I played the crap out of it! I tried to stress it as much as possible. Everything worked properly. The Antiphonal coupler is a lot of fun, especially in my church with the acoustics we have!

I guess it's good that the organ works. That's money that we don't have to spend. But, I want a pipe organ!
