whats your opinion on Keyboard stands ?

Hi Folks,

I am looking for a stand for my keyboard. there are so many different types I was just wondering about peoples opinions on the stability aspect of these stands.


I am favouring the Sturdy looking Z type design but Have no practical experience to draw on. I also think the double x style might work. Of these two which do you favour. Not looking to move it often But my music room does have a carpeted floor. Needs to fit a Yamaha. totally uninterested in the single x type
Is the Z type a good choice?

I always use Quiklok Z stands. I think you can choose two lengths. They are very robust and have many add on options. Sometimes second hand ones come up on the bay. I use one for my Kawai VPC1 and like the sturdiness with a heavy keyboard on it.

Z stands are good because there is nothing in the way of your feet and shins, so if you have lots of pedals it’s an ideal solution. I have seen a few pros using the Z series from Quiklok which is a pretty good endorsement.

I have a 38-lb Roland stage piano sitting on it. It doesn't collapse quickly for transport, but I decided on this one because it has two knurled knobs for the cross member (instead of one) and the detent-push-doohickies for height adjustment are on the front.

For Yamaha keyboards, I prefer to use the Yamaha L3C stand. Now maybe the new Yamahas don't fit them, but every one I've seen from the early 80s to the mid 00s fit them. However, if you're gigging, they're useless, because it takes a while to install them.

They work especially well on carpeted floors. The reason I prefer them is that with any kind of stand that doesn't actually attach to the keyboard, the keyboard moves around on the stand.

I also like the Z Type stands, although portability isn't this ones strong point as it is heavy and takes a while to set up, but it is great for home use.

I have my Yamaha PSR S775 on top with my Yamaha PSR EW400 underneath.

Z-stands will also go up pretty high if you ever need a standing stance. I tried that with a high stool and reminded myself that I was never in that crowd and now I'm too old to join in.

Stand for some synth solos,sit for piano parts etc.It varies.....
Hercules is more compact than Quik-Lok for the same weight capabilities.
Also moves/tears down as fast or faster.
The one I got in May from a rehearsal facility was like new.
It had been used twice in three years.....not much demand. KS410B
Found a second one in July,well used but still 100% functioning.
This proves how sturdy these are,roaded and functioning like new!
Got both off CL for the price of a new one.....

Most Z-stands come with rubber strips that stick on top, so unless it is a very light keyboard they are not going to move much.

Maybe the Yamaha digital pianos are heavy enough to stay put. But of the PSR- series of keyboards I've seen, they're all too light for this.

The Yamaha MOX8 '88' is lighter than a Nord,longer and deeper too. Still,it stays put when I hammer it.
I tried to anchor the pair with the C2D, an 88 is just too uncomfortable to play up top.
So I needed another KS410B,the organ isn't designed to ride up top either.
A 49 key synth should ride above the C2D.
One stand anchored with the 88 and a 73 compact above?Just right!
The Stage II is easily my favorite,still the old Yamaha really has a nice quality too,and a Z stand really is
what an 88 should rest on IMO.Of course the Z stand won't accomodate a 25 note pedalboard for the C2D,
lucky I have the Nord stand for it.On gigs usually in my case there is a bassist,which the Z stand easily handles a C2D.

Crews and stage managers like my hardwired keys pedalboard.That 88/73 stack,complete with
all outputs (9) pedals (5) AC and mixer/DI's(Radial),sets up or strikes in under 10 minutes,no ugly rats nest.
In and out!Everything stays where it is placed on the board.
The wiring snake is small enough to lay on it for transport and the monitor stereo pair and AC snake lays there too.
Makes the job go so much smoother,continuity and all the logistics leave time for better sound checks and performances.
Proud to have a glitch free show along with everything else considered.
Also nice? Rather than a furrowed brow at the sight of a Leslie,all thumbs up when everyone hears it!
My all time favorite stand though is still my A100....put the Compact up top,and right angle the StageII EX88! >;)
