Hi all, it's been forever since I stopped here but I was curious to see what the buzz is on the new Mojo CL. I got mine a few months ago and since my searches came up empty, I suppose I have to start a buzz myself.
I've been a loyal Hammond user, but I've never been quite happy with my XK3c. As a local Hammond rep put it: "You play pretty good, but you sound like ****". Sorry Hammond, it's not you, it's me. Since I was afraid the XK5 wouldn't do me any good and its ridiculous pricing turned me off, I've been debating Viscount vs Crumar for years without reaching a verdict, until Crumar launched the CL, which solved my biggest issue with the XT, it's dumb lay-out.
First impression is yay! I sound like I'm playing a Hammond again. In your face, Mr. Hammond rep! Everything I do does what I expect it to do and that can't be said of my XK3c. The lay-out is fine, with the exception of the Leslie button, which is easily fixed by installing the half moon. It lights up like a Christmas tree, which isn't quite my thing, but as long as I'm wearing shades I can get over that.
The manuals feel different (from the real thing) but not bad at all. Purists may have something to say about this, but I like it better than the old A I often play and definitely better than the old E I have in my studio, but that's of course not the right comparison. At this time it might be worth mentioning that I am definitely a pianist (silent t and all) before an organ player, so I do appreciate a little resistance in a key. Not that the CL plays 'heavy', not at all. Its just...different.
I have not dived into the editing options yet, since I'm having way too much fun playing it as is. I just know I'm gonna mess things up once I start fiddling with it. One thing I notice when I'm playing with headphones is a weird undertone in some of the registers that I don't think is supposed to be there (as prominent as I hear it). If I can tweak that a little more to the background I think I'll be 100% happy with my new gig monster. Might even be able to use it live again someday.
Other than the blinding lights, no frills, no thrills, no presets and no piano. Just the way I like it.
One design flaw that I consider stupid is putting the on/off button in the back. That makes it unreachable if you decide to place it against a wall, but also if you put an extra keyboard (synth/clav) on top of it. Silly, but no big deal.
Oh, one problem I ran into is with the half moon. I only recently acquired it because I wanted to check the basics before buying accessories. It doesn't do slow, just fast and brake. Might be as simple as a bad cable though. Will be resolved. It also works great with an old Behringer expression pedal I still had laying around and that never worked on any other board.
