Recenly I obtained an electronic Hammond organ, which was made in 1980. However, when I turn it on, the upper manual barely works (only the D's and F's do, but they're quiet) and in addtion there's a continuous high pitch ringing in the backround. I cleaned up the circuit boards, however that accomplished nothing. Any suggestions?

P.S. I'm seventeen, it's my first organ, and I have no idea what's what!

It's not the boards that usually need cleaning up, but the connectors between them. We call it 'LSI Disease' and it can cause all sorts of weird problems. There are lots and lots of them and every single one should be unplugged, cleaned with Caig De-Oxit and then plugged back in. Once you've done that, then you'll discover what's really working and what's not.

If you really have no idea of what's what, you need to start learning fast. First rule of fixing organs is be careful. Although the voltages in 90% of the organ are very low, the power supply still has lethat voltages. You have been warned. Second rule with organs of this era is watch out for IC's that could be destroyed by static. Earth yourself before poking around.

If you find you have serious problems, repairs may cost more than the organ is worth, which is realistically maybe $100-150 if it was working perfectly. Think before you spend serious $$$ on it.

It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

Andy, thanks for explaining LSI Disease. I kept seeing that term and thought, what disease is it that LSI's get? So it means a Disease that LSI organs get. Connector disease. [H]

BTW... we took a Grandee back in the early 90's and removed every connector on the wiring harnesses and soldered the wires directly to the boards. Recently that organ was being sold in an estate sale and I was certain it would have problems since it hadn't been serviced since we did that. To my surprise, it all worked!
