Hi everybody.

I have a Hammond 8122 (Aurora-series) organ from about 1980. It is a 100% electronical with no tonewheels or -generators I don't know much about it, as I got it 9 months ago. It has some problems though. When I turn the organ on, it makes this kind of "bang", which I've heard might indicate that somethings wrong in the power supply. Of course I turn down the volume every time I turn the organ off. After the "bang" it works all right except from the deepest notes which it can't play right. When playing them the lights on the rythm-box flashes and the tone also "flashes". That might enpower the theory of the problem with the power supply. Or it could be the mixer #3 (The main-amplifier)?

The pedals don't work as they should either. The 16' drawbar doesn't do anything (it is wired up and it has made a few deep "hums") and the 8' drawbar makes every pedal play the high C and at a really low volume. When opening to the boards I can adjust the volume and decay of the pedals, but that doesn't do anything but making the organ screwing up (and again the little lamp in the rythm-box flashes). It doesn't play loud either, but when turning up the volume in the mixer #3 the organ screws up again.

And then of course, there is a lot of noise and some random errors around the organ, but changing the leslie slow/fast usually solves these. But who am I to complain - I got it for free. [;)]

Do any of you have an idea of what might be wrong - if it's the power supply (transformers?) or the mixer #3, and how I can help it?

    Thanks.

    Re: Aurora-problems

Use an oscilloscope on the power supply outputs during the symptoms.

It is likely a bad filter capacitor and supply goes out of regulation at higher loads. Easy fix if you isolate it. The caps dry out and won't hold the voltage during the low parts of the AC input waveform.

The bang is due to temporary unbalance of the audio amps during power up. This could also be caused by bad filter cap.
