I went to an estate sale 3 weeks ago and could not believe my eyes-, there was a 1957 Hammond M3 organ that appeared to be in MINT condition. Not a scratch on it. Original books still crisp with bright pages in the bench, and a dry rotted head set that apparently still works. The price was reduced from $500 to $45. As a joke I asked if that was the least they would take, and I was told “It’s broken – it will not power on so how about $30”.

Long story longer, when I fired it up all the tubes came on except one (6AU6). I ordered 2 military matched tubes, and installed them. Nothing happened.. no sound, no spinning..

I figured it was a wick and its sole purpose is to keep that gear lubricated, right?

I knew a regular cotton thread would not work however, I just happened to purchase some large wicks (about 7 inches long) for an oil lamp that I use outside. I took one look at the wick and I knew I had a solution. I pulled a long strand from it and replaced the broken wick.

Actually common cotton string or even nylon fishing line will work. [H]
