• Northern Hammond CV with after market (A100 style) speaker system

I just finally got my 1949 Northern Hammond CV home today ($200 CAN seemed a pretty good deal). I was wondering if anyone could tell me the story behind Northern Hammonds and how they differ from regular ones...

    Cheers,

Search the forum for johnnyb3's posts on the subject. Someone else on here has one (I think they were both model D's but I'm not certain) and the subject was brought up not too long ago. Congrats on the deal!

Just cranked the CV and took it for a serious spin. I think I may have descovered why i got it so cheap:

It has really bad cross-talk a la some really bad overtones. When I play a middle C, I hear something like an Ab overtone.

Also, the TWG main motor assembly rattles like crazy. So I guess I've got my work cut out for me now...

        Doh!

I think I'll have to do (my first) re-capping job on the CV to make it playable. I found some info on that being suggested forum an A100 hear on the forum.

Also, still not sure how to fix motor rattle or how to build a box to it connect to my 147 or tone cabinets...

              Funky

It sounds like excessive crosstalk. This can be exacerbated by loose generator screws. If you can lift the manuals to make it easy, then check all of the screws securing the lid of the generator are tight, then get hold of a copy of the service manual. In there you will find a frequency chart for every key on every drawbar. I highlighted the frequencies that were filtered and un filtered as I had alot of crosstalk on my C3. You will find that the tones you want to recap are actually not filtered tones and that it is just down to a good service.

I eventually recapped and recalibrated my C3 to match the calibration of a 1968 red cap organ (because my preference is 60's and 70's rock). In the meantime though you may find you can get it playable just by trying what I have suggested above.

              Cheers

Re: Northern Hammond CV with after market (A100 style) speaker system

That's great news. I'll do a serious clean up/servicing and tighten down all the screws hopefully that will take care of the problem.

Once that's done my 3 other biggest hurdles are:

-connecting it to a 147 lesie

-fixing the noisy, rattling run motor assembly which may also be a matter of loose screws...

                - adding percussion

Thanks for your help everyone! The organ forum rules (obviously). How lucky am I to live in this day and age where something like this exists !!!

                cheers,

at a glance I'm not seeing anything that I would describe as a lid w screws. Do you mean the many flathead screws that run all the way around the bottom. Are they vertical or horizontal screws?

                  Cheers,

Northern Electric was building them earlier than that. My Concert Model E is dated 1938 and someone here has one from 1937. I have a 1957 C3 with "Canadian" stamped inside it but it doesn't say "Northern Hammond" like my E.

I gotta stop commenting on things that I think I see at a glance....

anyhoo, I dug a little deeper, lifted the two manuals to look at the top of the TWG and sure enough, there were loose screws in the lid... I tightened down all but one that was stripped and noticed that the filter cap closest to the stripped screw had a snapped wire. After a quick solder job I tried the CV and the crosstalk is gone. Not only that but the sound of this CV is amazing! It's a little brighter than my A100 though. Is that normal?

I'm glad the screws did the trick!

What year is your A100 and isthe generatorMylar capped? The CV would be expected to sound dullerdue to age but then it has a different pre-amp. Have you checked the tone settings on them and are you running them through the same speaker for comparison. The tone screw should be fully open. I can't remember which was to turn it but I think it says how to do it on geoelectro's site Benton Electronics.

That may depend on how it got to be a CV. If it was a Model C with a vibrato retrofit to make it a CV, the matching transformer may have different taps for the first three drawbar levels, making it sound brighter for the same registration than if itleft thr factory asa CV.

The Hammonds manufactured before factory vibrato (A, AB, BA, BC, C, D, E) had matching transformers with different turns ratios for drawbar levels 1, 2, & 3 than the later instruments. So, for example, a drawbar level of 2 on an old console should be increased to 3 on a new console for the same loudness. Ditto 1 to 2, and 3 to 4.

Turns out it's a true model CV serial # N2032 ( N for Northern Hammond? ). The loudspeaker system is home made using the guts of an old Northern Hammond PR-40. I will need to buy a $100 B+ power supply to make a line out or 147 leslie connection.

My biggest remaining hurdle is the rattling noisy run motor coupler/assembly. Should I try to fix it or simply replace it?

Thanks again for all the help everyone,

Just thought I'd let anyone following this thread know that I managed to fix the rattling noisy run motor coupler/assembly!!! I'm certainly not bragging though... I just find it to be such a confidence booster to find a problem and fix it though. Repairing the noise was just a simple matter of replacing one of the two springs (that had broken off ) found on the coupler between the run motor & the tone wheel generator...

After I add the B+power supply, a trek II percussion unit (anybody have a used one?) and do some tweakin, this should be a pretty serious Hammond....

                              Cheers,
