1936 Hammond A Organ w/147 leslie in need of repairs

    Hello All,

This is my first post and I'm new to your site. Thanks for having me!

Ok, not sure where to begin. This organ is old, but let me first say that the connections are pretty good. My organ and leslie has been in storage for 8 months. It was there because while we've been waiting for our church to be completed, we were holding services at a local hotel. When the storage guys moved the organ and leslie in last week everything looked good. Before I hooked up both the organ and leslie I took the backs off of both and tried to do some maintenance. Nothing extravagant or anything out of the norm, I just made sure that all connections were in place and checked for any damage or anything that might have possibly got moved out of place. The storage people did a real good job of wrapping both items and packing it.

After I put the backs on and plugged everything in I went to turn the organ on and as I'm hitting the first switch I can tell something is not right. So I let it run for a few minutes to warm up. After a few minutes of warming up. I started to play and just goof around with the drawbars and I immediately become depressed.....

Issue #1 - My Treble horns are not working. I'm not sure if that is a leslie thing or a organ thing. The bass motor is going good, but when you play, it sounds very muffled sense the sound is only coming from the bass speaker.

#2 - The last 3 drawbars don't work. Not sure if these two issues have anything in common with one another, but it appears that it does. These drawbars are my highs and so this is where my dilemma comes in at because I don't want to do anything to the leslie if the issue is an organ one and vise versa.

How can I tell what it is? Once I do, what should I do? We are on a low budget because of just moving into the church.

I can fix it myself if someone can direct me to a website or a book in the library or anything. I will take step by step process from this forum if that's what it takes. Please Help me!!!

    Thanks.......

Was the tone generator locked down when the organ was moved? If not you could of damaged a few wires there. Also have you lost three drawbars on all four sets?

Welcome to the mahogany shelved clubhouse, old bean!

Wifey's reminding me it's time to sleep, so I'd better not get too in depth right now...

BUT it's very likely there's a wire come off the crossover in the leslie, or even that the capacitor inthe crossoverhas died, by your description.

Do you know what the crossover looks like?

If you don't, it's a contraption with a bunch of terminals for attaching wires to, a couple of capacitors and two spools of thick red wire (well, most likely red.)

      I'll appear on the morrow.

      BUT

The beauty of your vintage instrument is exactly that: like a vintage car you can repair ANYTHING on it and it will never be irreversibly dead, short of an incineration of course!

      Cheers!

        Hello, thanks for your response.

No, the tone generator was not locked down. And yes I've lost the last three drawbars on all four sets?

Yes, I believe I do know what the crossover is. I'll take a look at it. I think the connections in my amps need to be replaced with newer connections

I had a cap go bad in my bass crossover last week (I'd replaced an earlier one with a substandard part!) and the pedals just wouldn't go through, though the mids would... but distorted with volume.

It's plausible that if the crossover HAS come unattached then those higher notes won't appear at all, then the middle notes will appear but sound weak (ie the part that appears through the bass speaker) while the lower mids will be strong.

We can pray that's the case, cos then it's only one small thing to fix!

Broken wires on the Tone Generator won't be hard to fix either, but it would be nicer to fix everything in one swoop, eh!

            Cheers,

That is exactly what is happening. The highs are not there at all and the mid's are there but very weak and muffled and the low's are bumping, even more so than before. So what should be my next step? Should I look for some loose wiring in the crossover?

              Thanks,

                I do believe so!

If there's not a loose wire there or anywhere from after the amp to the treble speaker, the capacitor may have died.

I think it's a 12.5 microFarad crossover cap for the 16 ohm horn driver.

Here's the service manual for the 147:

there's another one here which is probably quite similar, but IS a different manual:

                Here's a manual which covers the A:

                  Thanks Brendon,

Not to sound to ignorant, but I don't know much about electronics and I've looked at some diagrams and I might as well be reading Russian because I don't have a clue what it means. I want to become knowledgeable, but it looks pretty hard.

                  Thanks,

I've only been at it a year, those weird things make sense to me now!

We'll take you through the diagrams sometime soon and explain how they go.

Not right now though, I'm dying to get outside and see the sun before the evening kicks in!

                    Cheers,

Also, there's a useful but expensive ebook you can get from this guy:

                      http://www.archive.org/details/Hammo...iesB3A-100RtDG

The spiel is ghastly and long, but if you scroll, scroll, scroll to the bottom you'll see this ebook costs a mega $50.

You can also buy a print version which has better English (Pat Gagne is a French Canadian) and some good extra info, but that costs a TON more than the ebook.

                      http://www.hammondb3andleslietips.co...lesliebook.htm

I'd love the print version, but I'd also only pay that much if I was swimming in Uncle Scrooge's money bin and found a tidy sum caught up in my wet towel afterwards.

for the terrible price and his less than perfect English it's still a VERY VERY good way to get started in there!

If you can afford it, I do recommend it very highly.

This exact problem happened to me.........

I recently picked up a Leslie 21H for my C2. I paid so little for it that Isent the 30watt amp to Tonewheel General for a complete rebuild. (Mind you...I never actually heard the Leslie at this point....)

When I finally got the connector kit, switch, and Leslie hooked up, I had the same thing happen as what happened to you. Last three drawbars didn''t "work", and no sound out of the horns. "Great!", I thought. I knew I shouldn't have bought something without seeing it operate first.

It turns out, I pulled out the plug from where the horns plug into the crossover, cleaned off the contactsof the prongs, and plugged and unplugged them a few times.

That worked! (WHEW!) Give that a try first before disassemblinganything.

Ok, now after about 10 minutes of playing no sound is coming out. It won't produce sound. It is still not sounding right, but now it won't play past 10 minutes. Can anyone give a dianosis?
