  • Help with Hammond XK1

I recently bought an XK1. What is the preset #1 / cancel preset used for? I can use the drawbars but when I toggle to another present and then return to # 1 the drawbar settings do not work, without being reset. The 'adjust' preset allows for toggling and maintaining the drawbar settings. I've read the manual a few times and still can figure this out. I've been playing an XK2 where the toggle function works correctly. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't have an XK1 and since you said you've read the manual I won't try to download it and find a potential answer ... but just a thought on the fly here, based on experience with latter XK# series, is it possible that someone (prior owner?) used that preset #1 location to save some drawbar settings and that you need to resave 000000000 over that location so that it is equivalent to a "cancel" - which seems to be what you're seeking for it to perform? If you want a true cancel, you will likely also need to "undo" any other non-dafult settings besides the drawbars before re-saving the preset #1.

Hope this stimulates some thinking about what could be going on. - OneWatt

Thanks for the response - What I meant was, on my XK2, when the drawbars are in use on the 'cancel' setting, and then I toggle to a preset, the drawbar setting is retained on the 'cancel' setting when I switch back. However on the XK1, when performing the same sequence, even through the drawbars on in use on the 'cancel/#1' setting, when I toggle back, they don't play with being re-drawn. I had the battery replaced immediately after purchasing it and I would suppose that the board is back to the factory defaults as a result of the battery replacement. Maybe I'll try to re-set the organ to the factory defaults once again.

Without knowing the specifics, it seems like the XK1 is correctly mimicing the behavior of a tonewheel console; while the XK2 is not. On a real tonewheel Hammond, pressing the "cancel" key (the C preset) shuts up all sound altogether from the manual in question. Does the XK2 use the cancel key as a kind of "store-on-the-fly" preset? Meaning, it remembers how the drawbars were set the last time you were on the "C" preset even if they've changed position since?

If so, the term "cancel key" is a really confusing name for it
