  • Older aftermarket percussion units - which is the best?

Let's say that someone has an old organ coming in for restoration soon, and one would like to add perc to it; but would rather have something else than the TREK II percussion - because of looks, and because of maneuverability.

Which of the older units do you prefer? (I've never actually tried any of them)

    Edward?
    Electro-tone?
    Other?
    Current organs: AV, M-3, A-100
    Current Leslies: 22H, 122, 770

I recall the Electrotone was OK.
The Edwards was OK as well.
The TrekII TP-2B is light years ahead of the rest. Not an opinion,it is a fact.
As good or better than any of my -3 types.
I got what I paid for.
    Ugly?
The other ones I mentioned don't sound as good so go ahead and look cool if that is the priority....

It looks way too modern for this particular project, plus those sliders are a right pain to work with - I can't fathom why they didn't put switches on it; nor why there's no "off" switch so I can get my drawbar back...

No issues operating the TP-2B......I drive standards and automatics.
A mixture of 2' and 5 1/3' perc is not available on the others.
In fact,no mixtures are available on the others.Or the ability to dial the amount right in!
My perc on/off switch is my upper B preset ;>),usually all 8's.
Second choice for perc on/off is lower B preset with same registration as upper Bb.

The last Electrotone was built over 50 years ago,the Edwards will be over 40,so will any Hammond parts....
        obtain one and clone it?

If I were doing this,I'd hang M3 perc switches off an L100 pre/perc unit and forget the aftermarkets, which at best sound 'as good' as the L100.
With your expertise enor, you would be farther ahead doing this IMO.

I had a TREK perc unit in my gig CV for some 10 years. Hated the controls all the time - found it near impossible to change from 2nd to 3rd while playing without fiddling; BOY did I miss just being able to flip a switch and instantly get it right. It sounded very good, which made the idiotic controls even more difficult to accept. "If only.." was the thought constantly on my mind. Mixing several voices? Never needed it. "5th harmonic percussion"? Why?

At the moment, an Edwards seems to be the best option. Looks great and appears to have a good set of controls. Now just have to find one ;)

M3 perc switches - yes, I have done that before on my BC. On this particular one though I really don't want to cut holes in the drawbar base as it's a rather rare organ... details to follow in a couple of weeks when it lands here.

The DV I played with the Edwards was pretty good IIRC.

I would never cut holes in a drawbar base. The M3 switches are on long cables.
On a 'snake' these switches could rest anywhere, the music rack for instance.

Get a TrekII, strip the pots off, put the board behind the TWG, and wire the board to rotary pots and/or resistors and/or switches mounted in the cheek block. Or spread them out across the top of the drawbar base.

Not spending such a large chunk of my money and still being forced to reinvent it, make a new good looking control head. A used Edward unit is exactly what I'm looking for, just gotta find one. There was a complete one on ebay, but with a shipping quote so high it was ridiculous. Well, the search goes on and I'm in no hurry.
